St. John’s Drops Contest with No. 20/19 Creighton

Ber’Nyah Mayo finished with 16 points and a season-high five steals
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team was outlasted on Friday night by No. 20/19 Creighton, 71-51.
The women's basketball program hosted its annual Pink Game at Carnesecca Arena wearing pink uniforms to raise awareness for breast cancer and honor all survivors.
The Bluejays got off to a hot start offensively that carried them to their 11th-straight win on Friday. Creighton shot 57.7 percent (30-52) from the floor and 50 percent (9-18) from beyond-the-arc.
Ber'Nyah Mayo reached double-figures in scoring for the 10th time in the last 11 contests scoring a team-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. The senior recorded a season-high with five steals and five rebounds. Her five steals tied the most by a Red Storm player this season and were the most for Mayo since Dec. 21, 2022 against Saint Peter's.
Jillian Archer also finished in double-figures for the ninth-straight game logging 11 points and shot 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. The graduate student grabbed a team-high six boards.
Creighton's top three scorers- Lauren Jensen, Morgan Maly and Emma Rosniek combined for 54 points and shot 60.5 percent from the field collectively.
The Red Storm shot 10-for-12 (83.3%) from the free throw line marking the second-straight game shooting above 80 percent from the charity stripe.
In the opening quarter, Drake started out the scoring by flushing a triple. Tara Daye finished inside to make it 5-2 before Creighton scored ten-straight and hit 8-of-10 from the floor to start the game. With 0:15 remaining in the first, Daye finished through contact to earn an and one.
The Bluejays entered the second frame with a six-point lead and continued to fire on all cylinders offensively. Creighton hit three triples to go on an 11-0 scoring stretch and expand its lead to as many as 19, 34-15. The Red Storm quickly responded with a 6-0 spurt capped off by a steal and score by Ber'Nyah Mayo. It was Daye once again with the bucket in the final minute of regulation, draining a mid-range to head into the break trailing by 13, 36-23.
In the third quarter, St. John's clawed its way back and cut the deficit to as few as eight after Jailah Donald drilled a 3-pointer and Archer got a hook shot to go. The squads continued to trade baskets as Mayo took off for another fastbreak lay-in to make it a 10-point game, 51-41. After Maly nailed a triple, Archer got one to go in the paint as Creighton (21-3, 12-2 BIG EAST) carried an 11-point cushion into the fourth, 54-43. The Johnnies scored 20 points during the third stanza.
In the fourth quarter, the Bluejays continued to have the hot-hand starting the final frame on a 15-3 scoring run to build up their largest lead, 69-46. Mayo broke the scoring drought by hitting her second triple of the night from the corner. Creighton coasted to a 71-51 victory in Queens and jumps ahead in the all-time series, 14-13.
The Red Storm will now prepare for its next contest in the nation's capital on Tuesday night, when it faces Georgetown at 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena.
