St. John’s to Open California Trip Against Northern Colorado

Red Storm will start its trip to the West Coast on Sunday
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The St. John's softball team (4-6) is set to open its trip to California against the Northern Colorado Bears (3-8) on the campus of UC Santa Barbara at noon on Sunday.

The Red Storm enters the contest winners of four of its last five after last weekend's CSU Blue / Gold Classic. St. John's swept all three games against UMass Lowell while splitting a pair with host Charleston Southern. On Friday, the Johnnies started the tournament off strong, defeating the River Hawks, 6-3, ahead of taking down the Buccaneers, 4-2. The squad split the two games on Saturday, winning 5-1 against UMass Lowell before falling, 5-1, in eight innings to Charleston Southern. The Johnnies finished the tournament by toppling the River Hawks, 8-1, on Sunday morning.
Loreley Francia received a nod to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after her performance last weekend inside the circle. The sophomore totaled 15 innings pitched, allowing just three earned runs on nine hits with 16 strikeouts to earn two wins and a save. The Spring, Texas native appeared in both games Friday, saving game one against UMass Lowell with 2.1 scoreless innings of work. In the ensuing game, the pitcher started against Charleston Southern, scattering three hits, two earned runs and five strikeouts across 5.2 innings to earn the win. Francia concluded her terrific tournament with a complete game against the River Hawks on Sunday, finishing with nine strikeouts and allowing just one earned run on three hits.
Cassidy Stouffer enters the contest against Northern Colorado with an eight-game hitting streak. The sophomore middle infielder has recorded a hit in all eight games she has received an at-bat in this season. Stouffer is currently slashing .455 /.500 / .591 after going 7-for-14 with two doubles, three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks at the CSU Blue / Gold Classic.
Hannah Mearns continued her impressive start to the 2024 campaign, throwing 8.1 innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits to garner a win and save at the CSU Blue / Gold Classic. The Santa Monica, Calif. native matched a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete game against UMass Lowell, giving up one earned run on three hits. Mearns currently holds a team-best 2.07 ERA in 23.2 innings pitched this season.
After recording her 100th career hit to end opening weekend, London Jarrard continued to produce at the CSU Blue / Gold Classic with a .389 batting average across the tournament. The shortstop launched the first St. John's home run of the season in the opening game against UMass Lowell on Friday before adding two doubles, six RBIs, four runs scored, a walk and a stolen base to finish the weekend on a six-game hitting streak.
Northern Colorado enters the contest with a 3-8 mark on the season. The Bears have picked up wins against Lipscomb, Sam Houston and UC Santa Barbara so far this year.
2023 All-Big Sky First-Team Selection, Lauren Strathearn currently leads the Bears with a .354 batting average and 10 RBIs. Last season, Northern Colorado captured its first Big Sky Conference Championship to qualify for the NCAA Regionals where the Bears' historic season came to an end against Washington and Minnesota.
St. John's and Northern Colorado have split the previous four meetings with three of those contests coming in 2020 at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Lamar. In their last meeting, the Red Storm downed the Bears, 12-5, behind seven combined RBIs from Gretchen Bowie and Kalei Sorensen.
After Sunday, St. John's will continue its California trip with a doubleheader at UC San Diego on Tuesday before a matchup with UC Riverside on Wednesday. The Red Storm will finish the trip at the Lancers Invite hosted by California Baptist from March 1-3.
