HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The St. John's pitching staff allowed one walk and seven hits in the team's first road shutout since 2022, taking down Sam Houston, 4-0, on Friday evening inside Don Sanders Stadium.
Starter Xavier Kolhosser halted the Bearkats' (7-3) five-game winning streak after unleashing six scoreless innings on the home squad. The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native allowed just six hits while surrendering no walks and striking out five batters. The righty hurled 97 pitches, 67 for strikes in his second win of the season.
Relievers Ben Adams, Tim Cunningham and Sam Mettert combined to surrender just one hit and one walk with three punchouts on 48 pitches out of the pen.
Battery mate Jimmy Keenan provided the key stroke with his first home run of the season. Blake Mayberry and Anthony Brienza registered multi-hit outings, each smacking a pair of singles in the contest.
The Johnnies posted its first road shutout since May 8, 2022, blanking Seton Hall, 6-0, at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The Red Storm threatened in the opening frame as Garrett Scavelli and Mayberry smacked back-to-back one-out singles before Keenan walked to load the bases. Sam Houston worked its way out of trouble to keep the game scoreless.
After Kolhosser stranded one runner on in the home half of the first, the Johnnies broke through in the second. Brienza laced a two-out single to right and swiped second shortly after. Jackson Tucker turned on a 2-2 pitch and snuck a double down the third-base line, scoring Brienza and lifting the Red Storm to a 1-0 lead.
The Johnnies put a two-spot on the board in the third with one swing of the bat. Following a first-pitch single by Mayberry, Keenan unloaded a two-run shot to left-center on the next pitch, putting St. John's up three, 3-0.
Kolhosser continued to stifle the Bearkats' lineup in the third and fourth innings. After a pair of quick punchouts in the third, the Red Storm defense caught Lane Brewster trying to extend his single into a double with Scavelli, Luke Orbon and Brienza completing the relay for the final out of the frame. The right-hander helped out his own cause in the bottom of the fourth, picking off Walker Janek at first before inducing a flyout to end the stanza.
In his final inning of work, Kolhosser allowed just one more hit before striking out Malachi Lott for his fifth strikeout of the game.
Southpaw Adams came on in relief in the seventh inning and tossed a 1-2-3 frame, forcing a flyout, a groundout and a punchout to keep the Bearkats off the board. The lefty registered the first two outs of the eighth inning before submariner Cunningham forced Janek to lineout to first in two pitches.
Tucker gave the Red Storm an insurance run in the eighth. The Johnnies' center fielder took one off the elbow and proceeded to swipe second and third before scoring on an errant throw for a 4-0 lead.
Mettert came on in the ninth and made quick work of Sam Houston. After sitting down Jeffrey David on strikes, the right-hander got Lott and Brady Christensen to flyout to end the game.
The Red Storm will return to Don Sanders Stadium on Saturday for game two against Sam Houston. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
