Five Red Storm players recorded multi-point outings
PHILADELPHIA – Five Red Storm players recorded multi-point games, but the St. John's lacrosse team fell short against Saint Joseph's on Saturday, 15-8.
Bobby Seel scored a goal and tallied an assist to stretch his team-best point and goal streaks to 10 games. On the season, Seel has 16 goals which is tied for the team lead and his 25 points are second most among St. John's players.
Junior attackman Brian Kelly scored and added a helper, giving him 118 points in his career and moving him into sole possession of 10th place on the Red Storm's all-time scoring list. Through nine games this season, Kelly has 27 points on 16 goals and 11 helpers. With the two points on Saturday, Kelly extended his point streak to eight games. Saturday was the 30th multi-point outing of Kelly's career in just 37 appearances.
Jake Wright tallied his third consecutive two-point performance, adding a score and an assist. In just six games this season, the sophomore has six goals and two assists.
Caleb Zuhoski netted a pair of goals for his third multi-point performance of the season, bringing his point total up to 11. Caiden Vlasimsky earned multiple points for the fifth time in 2024 after netting a pair for the Red Storm.
Richie Reid tallied his sixth goal of his freshman campaign and Drew Wasserman added an assist against the Hawks.
Dane Armstrong was phenomenal at the faceoff 'X', winning 17-of-25 draws. The 17 faceoff victories are the most Armstrong has had in a single game throughout his college career. The UMBC transfer started the game a perfect 5-of-5 and won 9 of the 13 draws he took in the first half. Armstrong also set a new career-high, scooping a team-best 11 groundballs.
The Red Storm won the groundball battle, 30-28. Jordan Hayes was strong in the midfield, picking up four loose balls.
Reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Kyle Munson made 11 saves between the pipes for the Red Storm. Five of Munson's saves came in the second quarter.
Matt Bohmer and Carter Page each scored a game-best four goals and added an assist for Saint Joseph's (3-3). Five Hawks players recorded multipoint games on Saturday afternoon. Ryan Bradley excelled defensively, causing five St. John's turnovers.
Saint Joseph picked up its fourth win all-time against St. John's on Saturday.
After three straight defensive stops to start the game, the Hawks opened the scoring five minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. Armstrong won the ensuing faceoff and Vlasimsky tied the game 27 seconds later. Less than 30 seconds later, Zuhoski buried a shot off a feed from Wright to give the Red Storm its first lead of the day. Reid gave St. John's its third goal in 90 seconds, converting on Seel's helper, pushing the lead 3-1. The Hawks ended the 3-0 run with 6:19 left in the opening frame to cut its deficit to 1 and tied the game at three with 3:25 remaining.
Wright regained the lead for the Red Strom on the man-up early in the second quarter, putting a pass from Kelly in the back of the net but Saint Joseph's knotted the score at four less than a minute later. The teams continued to go back and forth when Seel made it 5-4 on an assist from Wasserman before the Hawks tied it once again with 9:12 remaining in the first half. Vlasimsky's second of the afternoon gave the Red Storm a 6-5 advantage heading into the locker rooms.
Munson made two early saves in the third quarter to protect the Johnnies' one-goal advantage, but Saint Joseph's finally beat the St. John's netminder nearly six minutes into the half to knot the game at six. Kelly scored less than a minute later off a move from behind the net to put the Red Storm back in front, 7-6. The back-and-forth action continued as the Hawks tied the game for the sixth time with just under five minutes remaining in the frame and took its first lead since the first quarter less than 30 seconds later. Saint Joseph's converted again two minutes later to take a 9-7 advantage into the final quarter.
Zuhoski scored his second of the game 56 seconds into the fourth to bring the Red Storm back within 1, 9-8, but the five straight goals from the Hawks closed out the win for Saint Joseph's.
The Red Storm will be back in action next Saturday in Syracuse, N.Y., for the program's first ever meeting with Le Moyne. Faceoff is set for noon.
