The Red Storm produces eight runs in the fourth frame to end the game in five innings
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (9-12) toppled the Creighton Bluejays (12-9), 10-0, to wrap up the series in Queens on Saturday.
The Red Storm offense put together an eight-run fourth inning to take a 10-0 advantage that allowed the contest to conclude after five innings due to enforcement of the run-ahead rule. The win marks St. John's largest margin of victory since taking down Sacred Heart, 11-0, in five innings on April 27, 2023.
Elanna Lysiak delivered her first career home run in a big way during the fourth inning. The right fielder launched a grand slam over the left-center wall to cap the eight-run frame for the Johnnies.
Starter Ana Serafinko was flawless in the circle, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning. The left-hander allowed just one hit and two walks while tallying four strikeouts across the full five innings.
Shortstop London Jarrard notched five RBIs in the contest to bring her total to 26 on the season. The Carlsbad, Calif. native singled into right field, cleared the bases and scored herself due to a crucial Creighton error in the fourth.
Jess Bianco and Sydney Totarsky were terrific at the top and bottom of the lineup, recording three hits and two hits, respectively.
Serafinko set the tone early for the Johnnies, allowing just one walk in the first two innings to keep the score at 0-0 into the bottom of the second.
The Red Storm offense jumped out to an early lead in the home half of the second. The bases loaded quickly, following an Amy Mallah hit-by-pitch, Totarsky walk and Bianco base hit. Jarrard battled through a 10-pitch at-bat to draw a walk and bring home the first run of the game, 1-0. St. John's tacked on another with Cassidy Stouffer sending a deep fly ball into left field for a sac fly, 2-0.
In the circle, Serafinko continued to have her way with Creighton's lineup, keeping the Bluejays hitless through four, 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Johnnies' offense exploded for eight runs to put the game out of reach. The frame started with the first five batters reaching base – Lysiak walked, Totarsky singled and Bianco slapped a base hit into left field to load the bases with no outs. Jarrard then drilled a single through the right side that got by the Bluejays' right fielder and trickled to the wall, allowing all three runs and Jarrard to come home, 6-0. After a Creighton pitching change, the Red Storm offense was not done, loading the bases back up after a pair of walks and a Celia Macari base hit through the left side. Lysiak then stepped back into the batter's box for the second time in the inning and delivered the two-out grand slam over the left-center field wall, 10-0.
Creighton's Ella Dalton hit a one-out double in the top of the fifth, but Serafinko recorded the final two outs to seal the 10-0 victory after five innings.
St. John's continues its homestand on Wednesday with Manhattan at 2 p.m. before battling conference foe Butler next weekend.
