The Red Storm will face Marquette on Friday in the Quarterfinals
NEW YORK (April 15, 2024) – The St. John's men's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed in this week's BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP. The tournament will be held in Cayce, S.C. from April 19-21.
The Red Storm will face eighth-seeded Marquette in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center. When the two squads met on April 6, the Johnnies picked up a 7-0 sweep over the Golden Eagles at the St. John's Outdoor Courts.
The seeding was determined by the BIG EAST Tennis Championships and Coaches' Advisory Committee. The committee examined each team's regular-season schedule, ITA rankings, results against conference teams, common non-conference opponents and record against ranked teams.
St. John's concluded the regular season with a 19-4 overall record and won all four of its BIG EAST matchups. The Red Storm picked up wins over No. 75 Yale, Penn State and Dartmouth. Three of the squad's four losses came against ranked opponents. The Johnnies ended the regular season on a seven-match winning streak.
Ryota Kaneda has paced the Red Storm this season. The junior won a team-best 17 singles matches and finished 8-2 in doubles play alongside sophomore Adam Groves. Carl Gustavsson finished with a combined 21 victories this season while Danilo Raicevic earned a 12-1 singles record.
In doubles action, Armando Sotelo and Martin Bugaj were perfect this season, winning all eight matches they played together.
The Johnnies will look for their second consecutive BIG EAST Tournament Championship and their third title in the last five years. St. John's last held the top seed in 2022.
The winner of Friday's quarterfinal will face the winner of Creighton and Butler in the semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m. Sunday's championship match is also slated to begin at 9 a.m.
