QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Women's Basketball Associate Head Coach & Recruiting Coordinator Candice Hill has been named the Head Coach at UMBC.
"This is a homerun hire by UMBC. There is no brighter star or better fit for this job," said Head Coach Joe Tartamella. "I'm so proud of Candice and I know she will make her hometown proud as the leader of the Retrievers' Women's Basketball program."
Hill spent three years in Queens as a valuable member of Tartamella's staff. During the final two years of her tenure, the Red Storm made back-to-back postseason appearances. The Johnnies qualified for their first NCAA Tournament in seven years in 2023 and earned a victory in the First Four over Purdue. This past season, St. John's was selected to play in the inaugural WBIT and advanced to the second round after downing Florida, 79-60. St. John's recorded two top-four finishes in BIG EAST play, logged three victories over top-20 ranked opponents and got off to the best start in program last season, 13-0.
Primarily working with the guards, Hill helped mentor five All-BIG EAST honorees in her position group over three seasons. She guided three consecutive unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selections and the conference's Sixth-Woman of the Year Unique Drake in 2022-23.
A couple weeks ago, Hill attended the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association Next Generation Institute and was one of 32 coaches selected to attend the educational program at the NCAA Tournament Women's Final Four in Cleveland.
