No. 6 St. John’s Prepares for No, 11 Providence in the First Round of the BIG EAST Tournament Presented by JEEP

The Red Storm will begin tournament play on Thursday at 9 a.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will face Providence in the first round of the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament Presented by JEEP on Thursday morning.
The sixth-seeded Red Storm will face the 11th-seeded Friars in the tournament's opening round at 9 a.m. at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
The Red Storm (8-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) enter tournament play on Thursday winners of its past three matches. Against Stony Brook last Wednesday, the Johnnies pulled off a 4-2 victory before taking down Hofstra, 4-1, on Friday. On Sunday, St. John's finished its 3-0 week with a 4-2 triumph over Villanova for its first BIG EAST win of the season.
Mouna Bouzgarrou has paced the Red Storm all year, winning a combined 16 matches. In doubles play, the graduate student went 6-1 alongside Arina Gumerova. All six wins came on the No. 1 court and the duo was named BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week twice this season.
Bouzgarrou also excelled in singles play, winning seven matches on the No. 1 court. She enters tournament play this week having won her last three contests.
Freshman Noemi Babikova has also impressed for the Red Storm, finishing the regular season 6-1 in solo action. Babikova has won her last four matches. Alicia Gomez and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde each won seven singles contests and are both on a three-match winning streak.
Providence enters Thursday's contest 5-13 overall and 0-3 in BIG EAST action. The Friars are coming off a 6-1 defeat to New Haven on Sunday.
St. John's has won each of the 16 prior meetings between the two programs, most recently picking up a 6-1 decision on March 17, 2023. The Red Storm and the Friars have never faced off in the BIG EAST Championships.
The winner of Thursday's contest will move on to face No. 3 Georgetown in Friday's semifinal beginning at 12:45 p.m.
