Ana Serafinko’s home run and shutout performance propels the Red Storm past the Hoyas
WASHINGTON D.C. – The St. John's softball team (23-23, 12-9) shut out Georgetown, 5-0, to win the three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Storm launched a pair of home runs in the first two innings before scoring two more runs late, securing the game-three victory and series against the Hoyas (12-27, 3-15).
Ana Serafinko made her presence felt from inside the circle and at the dish in the contest. Before throwing a pitch, the two-way star crushed her fourth longball of the season with a two-run home run over the right-field wall to give herself the early lead in the top of the first. Serafinko also notched two singles, finishing the afternoon with a career-high three hits.
The Chino Hills, Calif., product also tossed her fourth shutout of the year, allowing just four hits while recording nine strikeouts. Serafinko lowers her team-leading ERA to 2.70 in 98.2 innings with 116 strikeouts this year.
Sophomore Sydney Totarsky drilled a solo home run in the second inning on her way to finishing the afternoon 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Totarsky now has two homers and 11 RBIs on the season.
Amy Mallah hit her fifth double while Cassidy Stouffer recorded her 23rd RBI for the Red Storm offense as well.
London Jarrard led off the contest by slapping a base hit into center field before Serafinko came to the dish and launched a two-run home run over the scoreboard in right field to provide herself with an early lead before stepping foot in the circle, 2-0.
The Red Storm extended its advantage to three when Totarsky crushed the second longball in as many innings off the left field, 3-0.
In the circle, Serafinko cruised through the opening three frames, punching out five batters to hold the Johnnies' lead at 3-0.
Mallah kicked off the fourth with a double that just stayed fair into the left-field corner. An out later, Natalie Casto dropped a single into right field before Totarsky reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. However, Georgetown starter Avery Wissmar battled back to record the next two outs and keep the Johnnies off the scoreboard, 3-0.
Georgetown threatened in the home half of the fourth, putting two runners on behind a Camryn Wincher single and a Gabby Park walk. Serafinko found her way out of the jam, striking out her sixth hitter of the game and keeping the score at 3-0 in favor of the Johnnies.
Serafinko continued her dominance inside of the circle, facing the minimum in both the fifth and sixth innings to hold St. John's 3-0 lead into the closing frame.
Totarsky started the seventh with an infield single to shortstop before Anese Thompson pinched hit, reaching on a fielder's choice and an error that advanced Totarsky to third. With runners on the corners, Paige Sterling pinch-ran for Thompson and swiped second on an errant throw, allowing herself to advance to third and Totarsky to come home, 4-0. A batter later, Stouffer hit a sacrifice fly into center field providing the Red Storm with a five-run cushion, 5-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, Serafinko sealed the series-winning 5-0 victory with a clean frame.
St. John's will conclude its 10-game road swing when it heads to FDU for a doubleheader on Tuesday. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m. at the FDU Softball Field.
