The junior continued to shine on the par-5’s making birdie on all six through two rounds
AUSTIN, Texas– St. John's men's golfer Peicheng Chen has tallied a 5-over, 147, and sits tied for 50th place at the NCAA Austin Regional in Texas.
The junior recorded four birdies during Tuesday's second round and finished with a 3-over, 74, on a 90-degree day in Austin.
The BIG EAST Champion has been exquisite on the three par 5's at University of Texas Golf Club. Over the first 36 holes, Chen is one of two golfers in the 75-player field joined by Tennessee's Bryce Lewis to birdie all six and holds a tournament-best 4.0 stroke average on par-5's
After a rocky start on the first three holes, the junior turned it around after launching an iron shot onto the right side of the green to set up a birdie putt on the par-4 fourth hole. He kept that momentum rattling off four straight pars and sent home a birdie putt on the ninth hole to finish out the front half strong.
The Beijing, China native kept it going on the back nine as a missile off the tee led to his second birdie over the last three holes on the par-5 11th. After a triple bogey on 13, Chen quickly regained his composure. After going just over the green in two shots on 562-yard 14th hole, he placed a quality chip to drain his sixth birdie putt on a par-5 in as many tries.
Chen continued to battle down the stretch making par on the following three holes before finishing out the round with a bogey on 18th hole to enter the clubhouse at 5-over, 147, for the tournament.
The final round of the NCAA Austin Regional is set for Wednesday morning and Chen will tee off at 10:42 a.m. ET.
