QUEENS, N.Y.- BIG EAST Individual Champion Peicheng Chen will head down to Texas to compete in the NCAA Austin Regional on May 13-15. Â
Â
The junior will play 54 holes over three days at the University of Texas Golf Club. The home of the four-time national champion Longhorns' golf program, the state-of-the-art 7,399-yard track plays at a par-71. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament on GolfStat.Â
Â
The field features 13 teams and 10 individuals from across the country. The represented schools hail from 16 states and 14 of the top-100 ranked golfers in the nation are set to compete in Austin. The top five teams and the top individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Finals at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, Cali. on May 24-29.  Â
Â
Chen earned an automatic spot in the NCAA Regionals after capturing medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championships. The Beijing, China native carded a 2-under, 214, at Riverton Pointe Golf Club in Hardeeville, S.C. After falling behind in the final, shooting 3-over on the first two holes, Chen rallied, climbing back to even par for the day and went bogey-free the last 16 holes. He became the second-straight St. John's player to win the conference title under second-year Head Coach Phil Wildermuth.Â
Â
The two-time All-BIG EAST selection has been in form as of late. Over his last four events, Chen has recorded three top-five finishes, one runner-up at the Southern Invitational and most recently his first win of the year at the BIG EAST Championships. During that span, the junior has shot even or under par in seven of his 12 rounds and logged a season-best 8-under, 205, 54-hole score at the Southern Invitational.Â
Â
On the year, the Johnnie has registered a team-low 72.3 stroke average and finished atop the leaderboard for the Red Storm in eight-of-11 stroke play events. Chen has recorded five top-10 finishes and 11 rounds under par during his impressive 2023-24 campaign.Â
Â
Chen will become the second consecutive Red Storm golfer to compete in NCAA Regionals after Jack Simon played in the Bath Regional in 2023. This will mark the first time since 2007-08 that St. John's will be represented on the national stage in back-to-back years. The Johnnies earned an at-large bid in 2007 before all-time great and major champion Keegan Bradley represented the squad in 2008. The men's golf program has participated in a regional tournament seven times over the last 25 years- 2001-03, 2007-08, 2014, 2023 and now 2024.Â
