The Red Storm go for a season-high 14 hits, advance to play top-seeded Villanova tomorrow
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 8, 2024) – The St. John's softball team took down fourth-seeded Seton Hall, 7-2, in its opening game of the 2024 BIG EAST Softball Championship presented by JEEP on Wednesday afternoon at Glay Field.
The Red Storm (30-25, 13-11 BIG EAST) offense exploded for a season-high 14 hits and scored in four different innings to advance to meet top-seeded Villanova tomorrow at noon.
Ana Serafinko was terrific inside the circle, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six batters in her 13th complete game of the year. The sophomore tossed six scoreless frames to open the contest, allowing St. John's to build its lead. The two-way player also added a single to her stat line from the dish.
Graduate Student Amy Mallah led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The three hits matched a career-high for the third basemen and her most since March 1 at California Baptist.
Anese Thompson also went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, drilling an RBI double and scoring once. The junior now has 16 RBIs in 2024, which ranks third on the team.
Outfielder Sydney Totarsky was a spark for the Johnnies' offense, leading off a pair of innings with a single and coming around to score both times.
London Slade and Cassidy Stouffer each chipped in an RBI to round out the scoring for the Johnnies.
After a scoreless first, Totarsky led off the top of the second by lining a sharp single into left field and swiped second soon directly after. Thompson then advanced Totarsky to third on a fly ball to right field before Mallah sent a long single to the left-field wall, providing St. John's with the 1-0 advantage.
Seton Hall (27-22, 14-10 BIG EAST) threatened to respond in the bottom half of the second, loading the bases behind a pair of singles and a walk. Serafinko found her way out of the jam, generating a weak groundball to first base to record the third out and preserve the 1-0 lead.
Totarsky knocked her second hit of the contest to lead off the fourth following a blank third inning. Thompson then reached on an infield single, putting two on with no outs for St. John's. An out later, Katie Whittaker battled through a 10-pitch at-bat to draw a walk, loading the bases. Stouffer followed up by producing a groundball to third and a Pirates' error allowed two runs to score extending St. John's edge to 3-0.
An inning later, the Pirates loaded up the bases for the second time in the contest in hopes of cracking the scoreboard in the fifth. However, Serafinko continued to show poise inside the circle, striking out the third out after falling behind in the count 3-0 to leave the frame unscathed and maintain a three-run advantage.
The Red Storm offense continued to stay hot in the top of the sixth after Mallah and Whittaker notched a pair of singles. Slade then won a 12-pitch battle, hitting an RBI infield single to plate Mallah and extend St. John's lead to 4-0.
Serafinko then tossed her sixth consecutive scoreless fame with the defense behind her executing a terrific 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.
St. John's remained relentless in the top of the seventh, plating three more runs all with two outs. Serafinko started the rally with a single before coming around on a Thompson RBI double into the right-center field gap. Mallah then drove in her second run of the game, lining a base hit back up the middle. Stouffer capped the inning with another line drive up the gut to plate Mallah and take a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Pirates notched their first runs in the home half of the seventh on a Kelsey Carr two-run home run off to left, 7-2. Serafinko and the Red Storm's lead proved to be too much to overcome as the Johnnies took their opening game of the BIG EAST Tournament.
St. John's will now continue tournament play against top-seeded Villanova. The first pitch is slated for 12 p.m. tomorrow at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
