No. 5 St. John’s to Continue BIG EAST Tournament Play with No. 1 Villanova

The Red Storm and Wildcats will meet for the fourth time in the conference tournament
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John's softball team will continue play in the 2024 BIG EAST Softball Championships presented by JEEP against Villanova on Thursday in Providence, R.I.
The first pitch between the Johnnies and the Wildcats is set now for 1 p.m. after originally being slated for noon on the BIG EAST Digitial Network (BEDN). Live stats will be provided on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (30-25, 13-11) took down Seton Hall, 7-2, in its first game of the tournament today to now meet with the top-seeded Wildcats (28-22, 19-5). The win against the Pirates marked St. John's second consecutive year of winning its opening-round matchup after taking down Butler, 9-6, in the 2023 tournament.
The Johnnies were hot on offense against Seton Hall, totaling a season-high 14 hits in the contest. Amy Mallah helped lead the offense by matching her career-high with three hits to go along with a pair of RBIs and runs scored.
First baseman Anese Thompson also totaled three hits which included an RBI double and a run scored. The junior ranks third on the team with 16 RBIs.
All-BIG EAST Second-Team selection Ana Serafinko started the tournament off strong, recording her 12th win in the circle after allowing just two earned runs while punching out six batters in the complete-game effort.
The contest will mark Villanova's first of the tournament after receiving a bye as the top seed on the opening day. In the two program's regular season series, the Wildcats got the best of the Johnnies, taking all three games at home in the middle of April.
Thursday's matchup will mark the fourth meeting all-time in the conference tournament between the BIG EAST foes. St. John's has won two of the three matchups including the last one back in 2016 by a score of 10-0 in five innings.
With a win, the Red Storm would advance to take on the winner UConn vs. Creighton/Butler on Friday at noon. With a loss In the double-elimination format, the Johnnies will have to wait to see when and who they play based on seeding.
