Giorgia Walther Earns 2023-24 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award for Volleyball

The All-BIG EAST recipient was honored for performance on and off the court
NEW YORK – St. John's volleyball senior Giorgia Walther has earned the 2023-24 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award for volleyball, the conference office announced on Monday.
The BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award is given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport. Each student-athlete is chosen based on academic performance, athletic accolades and volunteer community service.
Walther is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in international management and earned a 3.83 cumulative GPA during the 2023-24 academic term.
The senior standout was named to the 2024-25 President's Society in April, one of the highest honors on St. John's campus. Walther also participated in over 16 hours of community service, working with organizations such as Midnight Run and Interchange Food Pantry.
On the court, the Cannobio, Italy native has been an impact hitter for St. John's since her freshman season. A 2022 member of the All-BIG EAST Team, Walther ranks 10th all-time with 1,117 career kills for the Red Storm. In 2023, Walther racked up 379 kills, averaging 3.01 kills per set which was the second most on the squad.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be a junior in academic standing and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Athletics Faculty Representative Council.
