Peicheng Chen Named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week

The senior took home medalist honors at the Doc Gimmler Red & Black
NEW YORK – St. John's men's golfer Peicheng Chen was named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week after starting the year off with an individual title at the Doc Gimmler Red & Black.
The defending BIG EAST Individual Champion picked up right where he left off recording a 5-under, 206, over 54 holes finishing four strokes ahead of the next competitor at the Bethpage State Park Red and Black courses. The senior led the Red Storm to a runner-up finish.
Chen became just the second St. John's golfer in the last 20 years to take home medalist honors at the team's annual home event. The senior became the first since former teammate Jack Simon won the title on April 18, 2021.
The medalist honor marks the fourth of Chen's career in Queens. He has previously captured wins at the MacDonald Cup (2022), Southern Invitational (2023) and the BIG EAST Championship (2024).
The Beijing, China native started off hot in the opening round on Monday on the Red Course posting three birdies and an eagle to card a 5-under, 65. In the following round, he carded a 1-under, 69, to finish the day at 6-under and take the lead headed into the clubhouse.
In Tuesday's final round on the Black Course, the veteran battled through the difficult 7,468-yard track to record a tournament-low 1-over, 72, to take the individual crown by four strokes.
The two-time all-conference selection earns the BIG EAST Golfer of the Week for the third time in his career. Chen last earned the honor on April 4, 2024 after finishing runner-up at the Southern Invitational.
Chen and the Johnnies will be back on the course on Sept. 29 when they compete in the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse.
