St. John’s Sweeps Georgetown in Straight Sets, 3-0

WASHINGTON D.C. – The St. John's volleyball team swept Georgetown in straight sets, 3-0, inside McDonough Arena in Washington D.C. on Sunday afternoon. The scores of the sets were 25-9, 25-20 and 25-23.
Erin Jones was stellar for St. John's (13-3, 2-0 BIG EAST), posting her third straight and eighth overall double-double, after pacing the match with 15 digs and 13 kills on a 34.6 hitting percentage. The Albuquerque, N.M. native also registered eight assists.
Giorgia Walther racked up 11 kills, six digs, three blocks and a service ace against Georgetown (7-7, 0-2 BIG EAST). Magda Stambrowska recorded six kills at a 50 percent success rate with three digs and two block assists. Lucrezia Lodi tacked on six digs, five kills, two blocks and an ace.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the contest with 26 helpers, four digs and a season-high four kills. Ludovica Zola logged a team-high four blocks while Rashanny Solano Smith added eight digs and an assist.
As a team, the Red Storm registered match-highs with 49 digs, 42 kills and 38 assists while holding the Hoyas to a 5.7 percent hitting clip, en route to the team's sixth straight win.
The Red Storm opened the match with a 20-5 advantage in the first set, benefiting from a 12-0 run that was served by Stambrowska and burned both of Georgetown's timeouts. St. John's held firm through the rest of the frame, capping the set off with a Stambrowska and Lodi block assist to win, 25-9. Jones led the stanza with five kills at a perfect attack percentage with six digs.
The Johnnies raced to a 7-4 lead behind two Walther kills at the start of the second game. Georgetown was able to knot the match up at 11 off a 5-1 rally, but the Red Storm scored five consecutive points to take a 16-11 lead and force a Hoya timeout. Georgetown went on to register three straight scores to trail, 16-14, but St. John's used a final 9-6 scoring period to take the second set, 25-20, off a Stambrowska slam. Walther and Jones each tallied four kills in the second period.
The Hoyas earned a 4-1 edge to begin the third frame, causing St. John's to call a timeout. The Red Storm battled back with a 6-2 rally that featured three kills between Jones, Lodi and Walther to lead, 7-6. Knotted at 14, Georgetown put down three consecutive points, taking a 17-14 lead in the frame. The Hoyas held their three-point edge until the Johnnies rang up three straight scores, tying the set late at 22. St. John's was able to outlast Georgetown at the end of the stanza, claiming the sweep with a 25-23 set three victory. The final frame featured 12 ties and five lead changes.
St. John's will hit the road again next weekend when it takes on Xavier and DePaul on Oct. 4 and Oct. 6, respectively.
