Kylie Lavelle’s Big Day Paces St. John’s Past Xavier, 60-39

Lavelle scores season-high 23 points and nails career-best four triples in dominant win at Cintas Center
CINCINNATI – Kylie Lavelle's season-high 23 points paced the St. John's women's basketball to a wire-to-wire win at Xavier, 60-39.
The Red Storm (11-5, 1-4 BIG EAST) made five 3-pointers in the opening quarter jumping out to an early double-digit lead and shutdown the Musketeers (5-11, 0-5 BIG EAST) defensively on Saturday afternoon at the Cintas Center.
The Johnnies held their opponents under 40 points for the fourth time this season and held Xavier to 34.1 percent shooting in Cincinnati. The Red Storm forced 16 turnovers and recorded nine steals, including six from Lashae Dwyer. Dwyer leads the BIG EAST and ranks top-15 nationally averaging 3.3 swipes per game.
The Red Storm tied a season-best with 20 assists on Saturday afternoon. The squad logged 20 helpers on 22 made field goals (90.1%). Ber'Nyah Mayo finished with a game-high six assists and Phoenix Gedeon dished out a career-best five in the Queen City. Mayo added 10 points, six helpers and five boards.
For the second time this season, St. John's nailed double-digit 3-pointers cashing in on 10 makes from beyond-the-arc at a 47.6 percent clip (10-21). Lavelle finished with four from downtown and Ariana Vanderhoop added 3 makes from long-range.
Lavelle got off to a hot start drilling three- 3-pointers in the first frame and never looked back tallying a season-high 23 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting (75%). The junior reached the 20-point mark for the first time since her second collegiate game, when she scored a career-high 31 points on Nov. 15, 2022, while at Drexel. The Moosic, Pa., native drilled a career-high four 3-pointers and shot 4-for-6 (66.7%) from long-range.
St. John's opened the game on an 11-0 run, making four of its first five field goals at the Cintas Center. Lavelle nailed two triples in 3:04 forcing a Xavier timeout after drilling a 3-pointer from the top of the key. After the Musketeers' recorded their first points of the game after being held scoreless for the opening 4:32, Mayo responded with a made triple from the corner. Jailah Donald cashed in on her second triple of the quarter, Dwyer finished at the rim and completed the old-fashioned 3-point play to end the frame on a 6-0 spurt and hold a 20-6 lead after the first quarter.
In the second frame, the Red Storm struggled offensively as the Musketeers engineered a 12-0 run to climb back into the game cutting the deficit to two, 20-18. The Johnnies responded with Lavelle's career-best tying third triple of the afternoon to end the scoring drought in the final minute of the half. Xavier tallied the final bucket of the opening 20 minutes as the Johnnies took a three-point edge, 23-20, into the locker room.

Mayo found the bottom of the net on a fadeaway mid-range jumper igniting an 11-0 run that included a corralled loose ball from Dwyer that Lavelle finished on the break. After Xavier broke a five-minute scoring drought, Vanderhoop hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the scoring stretch to 17-2, building a 42-24 advantage. Lavelle found it from beyond-the-arc once again nailing her fourth triple as the Johnnies took a 45-27 lead into the fourth. In the third stanza, St. John's outscored Xavier, 22-4.
In the final 10 minutes, Vanderhoop flushed her third triple in under five minutes of game time as the lead continued to grow to its largest of the day, 48-27. Lavelle finished in the paint to reach the 20-point threshold. Xavier looked to creep back into the contest trimming the deficit to 14, 50-36 5:53 remaining. Mayo and Gedeon got buckets at the rim as the Musketeers' never got back within 15 as the Red Storm coasted a road victory.
