St. John’s Falls to No. 6/6 UConn at Carnesecca Arena

Red Storm hosted Huskies in front of a crowd of nearly 5,000 fans at Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team fell to No. 6/6 UConn on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena, 71-45.
The Red Storm (11-6, 1-5 BIG EAST) hosted the Huskies (16-2, 7-0 BIG EAST) in front a crowd of 4,917 fans that packed the stands of Carnesecca Arena.
Ber'Nyah Mayo reached double-figures for the ninth time in her last 12 games, totaling a team-high 10 points on Wednesday night. The graduate student shot 3-for-3 from the charity stripe and is shooting 85.7 percent from the line this season.
Ariel Little tallied a season-high eight points all in the final frame and dished out a team-high three assists. The New York City product drilled a season-high two triples and pulled down three boards. Kylie Lavelle added seven points on 3-of-4 shooting.
Freshman guard Janeya Grant and sophomore forward Julie Bahati tallied their first collegiate points in Queens. Bahati also pulled down three boards and recorded a steal.
In the opening quarter, Mayo scooped a loose ball and took it to the other end for the Johnnies first basket of the evening. After the Huskies jumper out to a 14-2 lead, Later in the frame, Mayo cashed in one a deep triple at the end of the shot clock. The Huskies shot 71.4 percent in the opening quarter to spring out to a 25-10 lead after the initial 10 minutes.
The Red Storm defense locked in during the second quarter holding UConn scoreless for over half the quarter and without a field goal for 6:05. Jailah Donald finished a smooth step-back jumper as the Johnnies scored five-straight points while shutting out UConn to make it a 32-19 ballgame. The visitors went into the locker room with a 15-point cushion, 36-21, The Red Storm tied the Huskies, 11-11, in the second frame and held them to their lowest scoring total in a single-quarter this season.
The Johnnies brought the energy to start the second half. Lavelle finished inside and the Red Storm forced a turnover as Dwyer came up with a steal to quickly bring it back to an 11-point deficit, 36-25. The Huskies responded smoothly orchestrating a 12-2 run to take a commanding lead. Phoenix Gedeon brought the run to a halt splashing a mid-range bucket. Later in the quarter, Grant recorded her first collegiate basket out on the fastbreak off a dish from Little. UConn carried a 54-31 advantage into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame with Huskies in command, Little caught fire knocking down a pair of triples and scoring eight straight points for the Johnnies. Grant recorded the final basket of the game draining a corner triple as the Huskies went onto secure a victory.
St. John's will return to Carnesecca Arena on Saturday as it celebrates the program's 50th Anniversary against Villanova at 2 p.m.
