St. John’s to Host No. 6/6 UConn on SNY

The Red Storm is coming off a 60-39 victory at Xavier
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 60-39 victory over Xavier, the St. John's women's basketball team is set to host No. 6/6 UConn on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on SNY.
Allen Bestwick and Meghan Culmo will have the call with Chelsea Sherrod on the sideline for the Johnnies' first showing on the regional sports network from Carnesecca Arena. Live Stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's (11-5, 1-4 BIG EAST) picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season, taking down Xavier, 60-38, inside the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio last Saturday. The Red Storm led wire-to-wire and held the Musketeers to just 34.1 percent shooting from the floor.
The Johnnies continued to play stifling defense on Saturday, holding its opponent to under 40 points for the fourth time this season. The group currently ranks 11th nationally and second in the BIG EAST, limiting the opposition to just 53.8 points per game.
Kylie Lavelle was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time this season on Monday. The junior averaged 18.5 points per game on 68.1 (15-22) percent shooting from the floor and 60 (6-10) percent from beyond-the-arc against DePaul and Xavier.
The Moosic, Pa., native powered the Johnnies with a season-high 23 points, including a career-best four triples against the Musketeers. Lavelle shot an efficient 9-of-12 (75 percent) and reached the 20-point mark for the second time in her career. The forward is currently averaging 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and paces the team shooting 52.6 percent (51-97) from the field.
Ber'Nyah Mayo scored in double-figures for the second straight game and for the eighth time in her last 11 appearances in Cincinnati. The graduate student guard tallied 10 points and five rebounds against Xavier. The Red Storm tied a season-best 20 assists on 22 made field goals in the contest, six of which were dished out by Mayo.
The Red Storm caused 16 turnovers and recorded nine steals against the Musketeers, six of which were gathered by Lashae Dwyer. The senior has registered 53 steals this season, which sits eighth in NCAA Division I and her 3.3 steals per game check in at 10th in the country and lead the conference.
No. 6/8 UConn and St. John's are set to square off for the 68th time in the long and storied history between the two teams on Wednesday night. The Red Storm last took down the Huskies on Feb. 21, 2023, in Hartford, 69-64. Current Director of Women's Basketball Operations Danielle Patterson and Kadaja Bailey each finished with 20 points during the historic victory at the XL Center.
