St. John’s Falls in Nail-Biter After Furious Fourth Quarter Comeback at Georgetown, 56-54

Red Storm tied the game with 2:13 to play after trailing by as many as 14 in the fourth quarter
WASHINGTON D.C. – The St. John's women's basketball team (11-8, 1-7 BIG EAST) made a furious comeback to tie the game in the final two minutes but ultimately dropped a nail-biter at Georgetown (10-9, 3-6 BIG EAST), 56-54, in Washington D.C.
Trailing by as many as 14 with under five minutes to go, the Red Storm engineered a 14-0 scoring run over just 2:35 to tie the score for the first time all game with 2:13 left in regulation. Georgetown's Kelsey Ransom scored the eventual game-winner with 2.5 seconds remaining on Wednesday night.
Kylie Lavelle has scored double-figures in four of her last five games and finished the night with a team-high 15 points on 50 percent shooting.
Lashae Dwyer logged 10 points, six rebounds and five steals at McDonough Arena. The senior recorded eight points and four swipes in the fourth quarter alone. The BIG EAST's steals leader, registered five or more swipes in a single-game for the fourth time this season.
Ber'Nyah Mayo was the third Johnnie to finish in double-digits, adding 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe. The graduate student also added three steals. Nevaeh Wingate played a career-high 15 minutes in the nation's capital, pulling down three boards.
Ransom led all scorers pouring in 28 points, including the game-winner. The Hoyas Ariel Jenkins tallied a game-high 12 boards.
St. John's forced Georgetown into 21 turnovers, including seven in the final stanza. The Red Storm shot 60 percent (9-15) from the field in the fourth quarter.
In the opening quarter, Lavelle got the offense underway for the Red Storm, cashing in on a 3-pointer off a feed from Jailah Donald. The reverse occurred just a couple minutes later, when Lavelle found Donald for the squad's second triple of the night. The Hoyas spurred a 7-0 scoring run that was ended by a lay-up from Mayo. The Hoyas led by nine, 17-8, after the opening `10 minutes.
In the second frame, back-to-back buckets from Lavelle and Dwyer quickly propelled the Red Storm with five, 17-12.The Red Storm went cold from the field as the Hoyas advantage expanded to double-digits, 23-12. Jayda Brown ended the scoring drought with a tough finish through a pair of Hoya defenders. Georgetown went into the locker room in front, 27-14.
In the third quarter, Mayo collected a steal and found Lavelle on the run for a fastbreak finish. The Hoyas fired back with a 9-2 run to stretch the lead to as many as 18, 36-18, with 5:31 left to play in the stanza. Skye Owen finished the and one, marking five straight points for the Johnnies to cut it 13, 40-27. The Hoyas recorded the final basket of the frame and carried a 15-point cushion, 42-27, into the fourth.
In the final frame, the Red Storm chipped away at the lead in the beginning fueled by a Donald triple to make it an 11-point game, 47-36, but were unable to bring the deficit back to single-digits. That all changed as the Red Storm created a seismic shift in momentum over the final minutes. The Johnnies began to apply full-court pressure causing fits for Georgetown as Dwyer tallied a steal and score to trim the Hoyas' lead to 10, 52-42. The press continued to force the Hoyas' into miscues as Mayo finished a steal and score to bring it to a four-point game. Dwyer fueled the furious comeback tallying eight points and four swipes in the final frame alone. The senior splashed a jumper to trim it to a two-point game. On the very next play, she came up with a huge steal and finished in traffic to knot the game at 52, forcing a Georgetown timeout and closing a 14-0 run.
