The Johnnies move to 2-0 for the second straight year
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team earned a convincing 4-0 sweep over Rider in its second match of 2025 on Wednesday at Cunningham Park. The Johnnies dominated from the start, winning both doubles matches and the first three singles contests to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
In doubles action, Giulia Bizzari and Charlotta Buss made quick work of Meadow LaDuke and Elle Catanzarite, 6-0, on the No. 3 court. Alicia Gomez and Victoria Papadpopoulou earned their second win in as many matches as a pair with a 6-2 performance over Laila Fishman and Sofia Gutierrez, claiming the team point for the Johnnies.
When the scene transitioned to singles play, Sandra Dzhambazov nearly pitched a shutout on the No. 5 court, besting Chloe Monachelli, 6-1, 6-0, to give the home side a 2-0 advantage. The lead grew to 3-0 as Gomez earned her second victory of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-4 win on the No. 4 court against Daniela Naves. Gomez is 4-0 overall through two matches.
Nicoline Sartz-Lunde took down Fishman at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3, to finish off the Red Storm's second win in as many contests. The sophomore is 2-0 so far in 2025.
With the victory, St. John's improves to 2-0 all-time against Rider, with both wins coming over the past two seasons.
The Johnnies will be back in action for a pair of matches this weekend to wrap up the four-match homestand to start the season. On Friday, the Red Storm will host Marist at the USTA National Tennis Center before returning to Cunningham Park on Sunday at 7:15 p.m. to square off against Morgan State.
