St. John’s to Host “Lou Carnesecca Day” against Butler on Saturday

Red Storm Athletics to honor the legacy of the late Lou Carnesecca in Queens for its 2 p.m. conference matchup on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team (11-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) will host "Lou Carnesecca Day" on Saturday, as it takes on Butler (7-7, 0-3 BIG EAST) in Queens at 2 p.m.
The St. John's Athletic Department will honor the life and legacy of former men's basketball coach and Naismith Memorial Hall of Famer Lou Carnesecca during the contest, as he would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Sunday, Jan. 5. The first 3,000 fans will receive a Lou Carnesecca statue figurine, presented by Coca Cola. His legendary career will be honored throughout the game and all fans are encouraged to wear sweaters.
The BIG EAST battle from Carnesecca Arena will be nationally televised on FS1 with Dave Sims and Tarik Turner on the call.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM radio channel 382 and via the SiriusXM App.
In partnership with cllct, the Lou Carnesecca Legacy Collection will be made available for purchase prior to Saturday's game. Limited edition Lou Carnesecca and Rick Pitino trading cards, sweater cards with textured holofoil, a one-of-one sweater auto booklet with autographs from Carnesecca and Pitino, as well as a one-of-one Carnesecca refractor card.
St. John's will look to bounce back after a one-point setback at Creighton, 57-56, on New Year's Eve in Omaha. The Johnnies forced the Bluejays' into 19 total turnovers, Creighton's highest total since the 2022 NCAA Tournament. The Red Storm recorded 11 steals on Tuesday, marking its fifth-straight game with double-digit swipes. The five-game streak marks the program's longest since the 2019-20 campaign, when it logged seven consecutive contests with 10-plus swipes from Dec. 31, 2019 to Jan. 21, 2020.
The Red Storm will return to Carnesecca Arena, where it has won 13-straight games, all by double-digits under Head Coach Rick Pitino. In eight wins at its on-campus venue this season, the Johnnies have averaged 88.0 points per game.
Defensively, the Red Storm remain one of the nation's best shot-blocking teams, ranking fourth in NCAA Division I, averaging 6.1 swats per game.
Zuby Ejiofor continues to dominate down low and leads NCAA Division I with 4.5 offensive rebounds per game. Over the last six contests, the Garland, Texas product is averaging 18.8 points on 63.1 percent shooting and 9.4 boards per game.
Deivon Smith went for 10 points and four steals in his last time out. The guard has tallied nine double-figure scoring performances and ranks third in the BIG EAST with 2.1 steals per game.
The two conference foes will meet for the 25th time on Saturday with the Johnnies leading the all-time series, 13-11. The Red Storm have captured six of the last seven and three-straight, all by double-digits. In the last meeting inside Carnesecca Arena, Daniss Jenkins led six players in double figures with 17 points to go with seven helpers and five boards in the 86-70 victory on Jan. 2, 2024.
Butler started the year with a 7-1 record but have dropped six-straight game to fall to an even 7-7 and 0-3 in BIG EAST play. In its last time out, the Bulldogs led by as many as 13 with 6:03 to play before Villanova orchestrated a 22-1 run at Hinkle Fieldhouse to take down Butler, 73-65, in Indianapolis.
