St. John’s to Face Marist and Morgan State This Weekend in Queens

The Johnnies will meet the Red Foxes on Friday before hosting the Bears on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team will host a pair of matches this weekend, hosting Marist on Friday before wrapping up its four-match homestand to begin the year against Morgan State on Sunday. Friday's match will start at 12:15 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center, while first serve on Sunday is set for 7:30 p.m. at Cunningham Park.
The Red Storm are 2-0 on the young season, coming off a 4-0 sweep over Rider on Wednesday. Alicia Gomez leads the Johnnies with four total wins. The senior has two victories in singles play is 2-0 in doubles action playing alongside Victoria Papadopoulou. Sophomore Nicoline Sartz-Lunde is undefeated in solo play through two matches and as a team, the Red Storm has not dropped any singles contests.
Marist makes the trip down the Hudson River from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for Friday's match after dropping its season-opener to Dartmouth last Sunday, 6-1. Viktoria Lorentzon served as the lone bright spot for the Red Foxes, earning a 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 3 singles.
St. John's is a perfect 4-0 all-time against their opponents from Upstate, most recently taking down Marist last season, 4-1, on Feb. 2, 2024, in Queens. Noemi Babikova earned wins in singles and doubles play to pace the Johnnies. This will be the third consecutive season the two programs will square off.
Morgan State also enters Sunday's contest 0-1 on the season, falling on the road to West Virginia, 7-0, on Saturday. The Bears went 6-15 a season ago, falling in the MEAC Tournament semifinals to No. 1 seed, South Carolina State.
Sunday will be the second all-time meeting between the Red Storm and the Bears, with the lone previous matchup coming in 2020, a 6-1 St. John's victory at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Following this weekend's contests, the Johnnies will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to East Brunswick, N.J., on Feb. 7 to face Rutgers. First serve from the East Brunswick Tennis Club is set for Noon.
