Daniela Monzon tallies early goal; Kayla Bower records career-high 10 saves
MILWAUKEE, Wis.– The St. John's Women's Soccer team (2-5-4, 0-2-2 BIG EAST) took an early lead but ultimately fell on Wednesday night at Marquette (5-3-3, 1-0-2 BIG EAST), 3-1.
Daniela Monzon scored her first collegiate goal in the early going to put the Red Storm in front in the seventh minute. The junior recorded his first two points in her 25th collegiate appearance.
Reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week Kayla Bower recorded her career-best save mark for the first consecutive match. The senior racked up 10 stops becoming the first Johnnie to register double-digit saves since Malene Nielsen finished with 10 at Butler on Oct. 24, 2024. Over her last four appearances, the Lincoln Park, N.J., native is recording 7.25 saves per contest.
As the BIG EAST matchup got underway in Milwaukee, Monzon dribbled her way into the attacking 18-yard box past the Golden Eagles defense. The junior fired a strike that ricocheted off of a Golden Eagles defender and hopped into the back of the net, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 edge early.
In the 23rd minute, Marquette's Josie Bieda bounced one in to equalize off assists from Coco Dorfman and Ella McAleenan, 1-1.
On the Red Storm's third corner of the evening, Leana Ruiz played a service into the middle of the box. Emily Riggins won the race to the incoming ball steering a header on frame that was stopped by the keeper.
The Golden Eagles nudged in front in the 37th minute as Capri Oliverio find open space through a scramble steering into the twine to take a 2-1 advantage.
In the closing moments of the opening half, Bower leapt into the air to bat away the oncoming strike as the Golden Eagles went into the locker room with a one-goal edge, 2-1.
In the second half, the home side extended its advantage in the 47th minute after Clare Shea added a tally courtesy of Dorfman's second assist of the evening.
Bower continued to rack up the save numbers over the final 45 minutes, including a highlight reel stop leaving her feet once again to knock a strike headed for the top of the goal over the crossbar in the 69th minute.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts No. 15 Georgetown at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium at 7 p.m.
