QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (5-14, 1-5 BIG EAST) fell to Marquette (11-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) at Carnesecca Arena on Saturday evening, 3-1. Senior Erin Jones recorded her 1,000th career assist during the match. The last Johnnie to eclipse the 1,000 mark was Wiktoria Kowalczyk in 2023, who finished with 3,953 total career assists. The scores of the sets were 19-25, 25-19, 11-25 and 23-25.
"Erin Jones joins an elite group of All-American and All-Region Johnnies. She continues to fill the record book with outstanding performances," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "I could not be prouder of Erin. It has been an honor to be a small part of her journey as a student-athlete."
Ella Parker led the team in kills with 14, followed closely by Martina Ghezzi with 13. Jones dished out 21 assists enroute to 1,000, and Rashanny Solano Smith led the match with 21 digs.
To open the match, Marquette jumped out to an early 7-2 run, but St. John's steadily clawed its way back and cut the deficit to two on a Ghezzi kill at 11-9. After a 4-1 run, the Johnnies erased the deficit and took the lead at 13-12. Following a series of ties, the Golden Eagles' advantage began to grow on a 6-1 run, and they went on to take the set, 25-19.
The Red Storm began the second set in a 3-0 hole but rattled off four straight points to gain the early lead. Both sides traded points through the middle part of the frame, reaching the media timeout at 15-12. The rest of the set remained tightly contested, but a Chloe Bell block triggered set point for the home team. Ghezzi sealed the deal with a kill, 25-19, knotting the match at one apiece.
In the third stanza, the two teams exchanged small runs to tie the set at 5-5. The Golden Eagles then used a 10-0 run to break the frame open, 15-5. In the latter part of the set, Jones recorded her 1,000th career assist on a helper to Ghezzi, making it 24-11. Marquette went on to take the set, 25-11.
The fourth game began with neither team holding more than a two-point lead, and an Ella Parker kill knotted the set at 10-10. The Golden Eagles used a 7-3 run to force the home team to use both timeouts, but back-to-back Ghezzi kills and a Harris–Jones combo block brought the Johnnies within one. Another Ghezzi kill tied the set once again, as both teams refused to allow more than a one-point advantage. At 23-23, Marquette called its final timeout and fired off two kills to take the fourth set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
The Red Storm return to Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday for a matinee matchup with Seton Hall. First serve against the Pirates is set for 12 p.m., as the team hosts Field Trip Day.
