Kayla Bower records eight or more saves for the fourth-straight contest
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The St. John's women's soccer team (2-8-4, 0-5-2 BIG EAST) held one of the nation's top scoring offenses in No. 20 Xavier (11-2-2, 6-0-1 BIG EAST) scoreless for the first half before the Musketeers pulled away over the final 45 minutes to claim a 3-0 victory at Corcoran Field.
Xavier extended its unbeaten streak to 13 consecutive matches after logging three goals just 11:48 apart on a crisp fall evening in Cincinnati.
For the fourth straight contest, Kayla Bower has logged eight saves or more, tallying eight stops in Wednesday night's setback in Queen City. The senior captain leads the BIG EAST in saves and now sits three stops shy of entering the top-10 all-time in single-season saves in St. John's Women's Soccer history.
In the opening half, the Red Storm defense contained one of the most high-powered offenses in NCAA Division I soccer. Bower made three crucial stops while the central defenders Telma Steindorsdottir and Emily Riggins cleared away danger on numerous occasion.
In the second half, the Musketeers got on the board quickly as Xavier's Reagan Dancer weaved her way through the box eventually getting free to send a strike into the right side of the next.
In the 51st minute, the home side doubled its advantage as Peyton Kohls got on the end of a long cross into the box from Samantha Erbach. In the 60th minute, the Musketeers completed the scoring as Erbach, the only player in the nation to log double-digit goals and assists this season, struck off helpers from Dancer and Reese Slater.
Bower continued to add to the highlight reel, making a miraculous stop in the 63rd minute. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native came off her line to face a point blank strike from 10 yards out and stopped the rocket to win the one-on-one battle.
St. John's will return to the pitch in one week when it welcomes Butler for a 7 p.m. contest at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on ESPN+.
