QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team (2-8-5, 0-5-3 BIG EAST) earned a draw on Wednesday night against Butler (5-4-6, 2-3-3 BIG EAST) after responding with a quick equalizer.
Hope Van Tuyle added her first goal of the season netting the game-tying goal in the 74th minute to snap a skid and grab a point in BIG EAST play. The tally marked the sophomore's second of her career and first since a 2-1 win at Penn on Sept. 15, 2024. The Leesburg, Va., native led the charge with two shots.
Leana Ruiz provided the assist on Van Tuyle's goal on the in-swinging cross. The helper marks the first of the freshman's career.
Kayla Bower etched her name into the record books moving into the top-10 all-time in single-season saves, surpassing Naya Lipkens, who logged 86 stops during the 2021 campaign leading the Johnnies to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. The senior captain registered six saves to move to 89 total stops for the season, extending her streak of six saves or more to nine eight games.
In the opening half, the Bulldogs started off the contest string together opportunities on the offensive end that were steered away by Bower.
The Red Storm engineered its best offensive chance in the opening half as Ruiz took it down the left wing, launching a strike nearly 30 yards out that put stress on the goaltender as Addison Ash _ had to punch it over the bar.
The two sides went to the locker room scoreless on a brisk fall night at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium, 0-0.
In the latter half, the Bulldogs' Talia Sommer fired a strike toward the right side of the net as Bower sprawled out to make an impressive stop. The Lincoln Park, N.J. native's next save moved her into the top-10 all-time in single-season stops in St. John's Women's Soccer history.
Butler got on the board as Daphne Murray finished off of a cross in the 71st minute to lift the visitors to a 1-0 advantage. Alyssa Carlson and Leila Lister provided the assists on the goal.
Just under three minutes later, Ruiz sent a perfectly placed cross right in front of the goalmouth as Van Tuyle charged in knocking the volley into the top center of the net in the 74th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Down the stretch, Leah Anand came up with a crucial blocked shot and Bower made her final save of the night as just seconds dwindled down to give the Red Storm a point in conference play snapping a four-game skid.
St. John's will be back in action for its home finale on Saturday night when it faces DePaul at 7 p.m. The contest from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium will be streamed on ESPN+.
