Red Storm enter Friday’s contest after a pair of comeback victories in league play
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's men's soccer team (6-3-3, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) will look to maintain its momentum after a pair of comeback victories in league play when it travels to UConn (7-3-3, 2-2-0 BIG EAST) on Friday night.
Friday's matchup from Morrone Stadium will be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies head into the contest following a pair of come-from-behind victories against then-No. 19 Akron, 2-1 (Oct. 3) and Providence, 3-2 (Oct. 11). The Red Storm trailed by two goals in its contest on Saturday against the Friars before orchestrating a miraculous comeback. Guilherme Gomes finished a strike in the 88th minute off assists from Jeremy Sharp and Gabin Thomelier to lift the Red Storm to a critical three points at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
Gomes' game-winning goal marked his fifth of the season, which ranks fifth nationally among freshman. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native became the first rookie to score four goals in a single-game in a 5-0 thrashing of New Hampshire on Aug. 28.
St. John's is seeking its first three-game winning streak in BIG EAST play since it captured three straight victories from Oct. 4-19, 2021.
Center back Bjorn Nikolajewski has shown his offensive prowess over scoring three goals over his last six appearances after not logging a single tally in his first 48 collegiate appearances. The graduate student fired home a penalty kick in the final minute of the opening half on Saturday to jumpstart to Johnnies' comeback victory over the Friars. The Berlin, Germany native will return to his former school having spent two seasons with Huskies in 2021-22.
The Red Storm have gotten distribution in many different ways recording 16 assists on 17 goals from nine different players. Thomelier, Sharp and Julian Jakopovic are tied for the team-lead with three helpers each.
The two longtime BIG EAST rivals will meet on the pitch for the 42nd time on Friday night in Storrs. St. John's leads the all-time series 17-16-8. The Johnnies have tied three of their last five matches against the Huskies and are looking for their first victory over UConn since the spring 2021 campaign.
UConn enters the match with a 7-3-3 record and have dropped three of their last four matches. Earlier this season, the Huskies were ranked as high as No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches' Top-25 poll.
Austin Brumett paces the UConn attack with a team-high six goals and 14 points. Charlie Holmes has added four goals and three assists. The goalkeeper Kyle Durham has recorded five clean sheets and boasts a .808 save percentage.
Following Friday's match, St. John's will be back in action on Tuesday night at Monmouth for its final non-conference contest against a Division I opponent.
