QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (8-17, 4-8 BIG EAST) secured its second victory of the weekend against Providence (11-14, 2-10 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon in a marathon five-set match, 3-2, marking the first five-set win of the season. With the win, the Red Storm completed the season sweep and extended their win streak to eight straight match victories over the Friars.
Prior to the start of the match, the program welcomed back former Johnnies for Alumni Day. More than 15 players and their families from across the program's 32-year history came back to Queens to celebrate their time with the Red Storm.
The set scores were 25-22, 18-25, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-10. Seven Johnnies collected kills and four dug up 10 or more balls in Carnesecca Arena, as multiple players set season- and career-highs.
Martina Ghezzi finished with both a match- and career-high 19 kills to power the St. John's offensive unit. Ludovica Zolamatched her career-high 10 kills and Ella Parker also contributed 10 kills. Erin Jones took over setting duties, dishing out a match- and career-high 55 assists. The last time a Johnnie recorded over 55 assists was when Wiktoria Kowalczyk notched 60 helpers in a 3-2 victory against UConn on Sept. 24, 2022, in Queens, N.Y.
Rashanny Solano Smith collected a match-high 24 digs. Ghezzi dug up 16 balls to collect her third double-double. Jones and Ana Franca Benjamim each chipped in 13 digs, as Jones collected her second straight double-double and her seventh of the season. Kya Harris came up big for the Red Storm defense, swatting away three total shots.
The Red Storm took control early in the first set, taking a 9-5 lead. The hosts' offensive production continued as the advantage grew to as many as eight at 18-10. The Friars cut into the
deficit, but not before the Johnnies would be the first to set point at 24-20. Providence was able to stave off set point twice, but a Parker kill was all that was needed to seal the deal at 25-22.
In the second game, it was the Friars who held the advantage in the beginning stages and forced a St. John's timeout at 8-5. The Johnnies cut into the lead at 11-10, but with Solano Smith at the service line, the offense rattled off two quick points to take the lead at 12-11. After exchanging points, the visitors responded with a 10-1 run and never looked back, taking the set 25-18 and knotting the match at one set apiece.
The third stanza started like the previous one as Providence jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. St. John's battled its way back to cut it to two at 13-11. As the stanza rolled on, the lead went back to four in favor of the visitors, 18-14. In the latter portion of the set, the Red Storm were able to fend off set point twice and tie the set at 24-24. The hosts were able to get a set point of their own and capitalized, taking the stanza 26-24 and a match lead of 2-1.
At the start of the fourth frame, Providence took another lead out of the gate, but the Red Storm came back to force an 8-8 deadlock. During the middle portion of the set, it was the Friars who took an 18-14 lead. The Johnnies responded with a 5-1 run and forced Providence to take a timeout at 19-18. Down the homestretch, the visitors struggled to keep distance from St. John's and called timeout at 23-21. In the end, the Friars took the fourth frame, 25-21, forcing an ultimate fifth set.
In the final set, the Red Storm were able to take a quick 5-2 lead. The Johnnies continued to push and built on the lead enroute to capturing their first five-set win this season, 15-10.
St. John's will take its final regular season road trip to the Midwest next weekend. On Nov. 7, the Johnnies head to Milwaukee for a matchup with Marquette at 8 p.m. The next day, the
Red Storm travel down to the Windy City and take on DePaul at 5 p.m.
