The Red Storm ready for battles with Marquette and DePaul
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 6, 2025) – The St. John's volleyball team (8-17, 4-8 BIG EAST) hits the road for its final Midwest road swing of the 2025 regular season. The Red Storm will face off against Marquette (13-9, 7-5 BIG EAST) and DePaul (12-11, 5-7 BIG EAST). On Friday, the Johnnies head to the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee for an 8 p.m. EST (7 p.m. CST) first serve. The following afternoon, the squad will be in Chicago for a 5 p.m. EST (4 p.m. CST) start against the Blue Demons in McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Friday's match at Marquette air on ESPN+ and Saturday's match will air on Marquee Sports Network. The matches will have live stats available on redstormsports.com.
Joanne Persico, the only head coach in program history, notched her 600th career victory last weekend in a 3-1 decision over UConn in Carnesecca Arena. In her 32 years at the helm of the program, Persico is the all-time winningest head coach in the BIG EAST and the first volleyball head coach to reach the 600-career win threshold.
St. John's closed out its final homestand of the 2025 season with back-to-back BIG EAST victories over UConn and Providence at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm opened the weekend on Friday night with a 3-1 win over UConn. After dropping the opening set, St. John's responded by taking the next three behind a balanced offensive effort. Martina Ghezzi tallied 13 kills, while Erin Jones posted a 34-assist, nine-kill, 16-dig performance. Rashanny Solano Smith anchored the defense with 21 digs.
On Saturday afternoon, St. John's completed the season sweep of Providence with a 3-2 marathon victory. Ghezzi delivered a match- and career-high 19 kills, and Jones turned out a career-high 55 assist performance. Four Red Storm players recorded double-figure digs, led by Solano Smith's 24. The five-set win also marked the Johnnies' first five-set victory of the season.
The last time out against Marquette, Red Storm fell 3-1 in Queens. Jones reached a milestone with her 1,000th career assist during the third set and finished with 21 assists. Ella Parker led St. John's offensively with 14 kills, while Ghezzi added 13, and Solano Smith posted a match-high 21 digs.
Previously against DePaul the Johnnies fell in straight sets to the Blue Demons, marking the first time in series history that the Red Storm we're swept in consecutive matches. Ghezzi tied her then-career high with 14 kills and led St. John's with nine digs, while also adding two total blocks. Jones paced the offense with 19 assists.
Heading into the penultimate weekend, Marquette finds itself in the thick of the BIG EAST conference tournament race. With 7-5 record in league play, the Golden Eagles are holding onto the final spot for the BIG EAST Tournament. Playing only seven of its 22 matches away from Milwaukee, Marquette has a 4-3 record on the road. In their last five matches at the Al McGuire Center, the Johnnies are 1-4.
Marquette's offensive unit is led by Natalie Ring who leads the league with 383 kills. Isabela Haggard quarterbacks the offense with 789 total assists, which currently sits fifth in the BIG EAST.
The Golden Eagle defensive efforts see two players recording over 200 digs, but Adriana Studer leads the way with 308 total digs. Hattie Bray is the top netminder, swatting over 93 total shots which includes 23 solo blocks.
The Blue Demons are in the hunt for a BIG EAST postseason bid. They are two games back from the final playoff spot that is occupied by Marquette.
Since the series began in 2004, DePaul has never beaten the Johnnies three consecutive times. Over the last ten matches, the two squads have played to a 5-5 deadlock. In the last five matches at McGrath-Phillips Arena dating back to 2019, the Red Storm are 3-2. The last time St. John's won in Chicago was during the fall of 2023 in 3-1 decision.
Kendall Timme leads the Blue Demons in kills with 250 with three other players contributing to the DePaul offensive unit with more than 180 kills. Amanda Saeger paces the offense with 757 total assists (8.80aps.), which sits fifth in the conference.
On the defensive side of the net, Eva Hurrle ranks second in the BIG EAST in digs per set with 4.49, racking up 346 total digs. Four other Blue Demons have recorded more than 130 digs throughout the season. Jade Epps guides the DePaul blocking unit, recording 99 total blocks which sits third in the BIG EAST.
Following this weekend, the Johnnies will wrap up the regular season with a home and away series. On Nov. 14, St. John's will welcome No.12 Creighton to Queens, as the program celebrates Senior Night. First serve against the Bluejays is set for 7 p.m. and Senior Night festivities will take place prior to the start of the match. The next day, the Red Storm travel across the Hudson River and take on Seton Hall for the final match of the 2025 regular season. The second date with the Pirates starts at 1 p.m.
