The Red Storm men’s basketball team records highest point total since Nov. 9, 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The No. 5/6 St. John's men's basketball team (1-0) blew past Quinnipiac (0-1) to open the 2025-26 season on Monday in Queens, 108-74.
 
St. John's offense exploded scoring 108 points, the program's highest total since a 119-61 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 9, 2021, in the 2021-22 season opener at Carnesecca Arena.
 
Dillon Mitchell led five Johnnies in double-figures and 12 Red Storm scorers with 18 points. The Johnnies shot 56.5% (39-69) from the field and orchestrated a stretch of 13 made shots on 14 attempts during the second half. The Red Storm also dominated down low tallying 60 points in the paint.
 
Mitchell shined for the Red Storm, shooting 7-for-9 from the field while grabbing seven boards and tying a career-high with four steals.
 
Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Zuby Ejiofor lived up to the billing adding 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, six rebounds, three assists and one block. Ian Jackson turned in a 15-point effort on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting night and buried three 3-pointers.
 
Joson Sanon chipped in 14 points in his St. John's debut. Sadiku Ibine Ayo was the fifth Johnnie in double-figures, notching 10 points for his second-ever double-digit scoring outing.
 
The Johnnies logged 25 assists on 39 made field goals, marking the program's highest helper total since it dished out 26 in a victory at DePaul on March 5, 2024. Dylan Darling posted a game-high six assists while Oziyah Sellers added five dimes on Monday.
 
Quinnipiac's Keith McKnight led all scorers in the season opener, finishing with 19 points to pace the Bobcats.
 
The Red Storm kicked off the 2025-26 campaign with a celebration of last year's BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Championships. The Johnnies unveiled banners commemorating both of their league titles and honoring 2024-25 National Coach of the Year Rick Pitino. After the banner reveal, St. John's four returnees received their BIG EAST Championship rings at midcourt.
 
Jackson scored the first five points of the evening to jumpstart the Red Storm's offensive surge. St. John's hit eight of its first 10 field goal attempts, as Mitchell threw down three thunderous dunks, including his final one that capped off a 19-4 run to open the game.
 
Later in the opening stanza, the Red Storm expanded its advantage after Sanon and Ibine Ayo combined for 13-straight St. John's points. The Johnnies advantage ballooned to 23, 34-11, with 9:17 left in the first half.
 
The Bobcats responded with an 8-1 rally but that was countered with St. John's 8-0 run that included a breakaway jam from Oziyah Sellers. The spurt brought the Red Storm to its largest lead of the opening half, 45-31, with 5:31 left on the clock.
 
Quinnipiac climbed back within 15 after reigning MAAC Player of the Year Amarri Monroe buried a triple to make it 49-34 with just under two minutes left to play. The Red Storm added the last five points of the half capped off by Darling's corner triple to put the. Johnnies up 20 at the break.
 
In the second half, St. John's put the game out of reach with 10 consecutive made field goals, as the Red Storm engineered a 23-4 scoring run. The dominant offensive stretch was closed out by back-to-back triples from Jackson and Lefteris Liotopoulos expanding the lead to 89-52 with 8:42 remaining.
 
St. John's domination continued as the Johnnies rattled off another 13-2 run that was closed out by Kelvin Odih's first collegiate points, which gave St. John's its largest of the game, 102-57.
 
In the final minutes, freshman guard Fotis Konstantinidis cashed in a triple to close out the scoring and bring the sold-out crowd to their feet.
 
Prior to the game, the St. John's Athletic Department honored the life and memory of double alumnus and super fan Derek "D.J." Southerland with a moment of silence, who tragically passed away at the age of 29 in April.
 
On Saturday, the Johnnies will make Madison Square Garden regular season debut when they take on No. 15/16 Alabama at 12 p.m.
