St. John’s to Resume BIG EAST Play at Villanova

The Red Storm and the Wildcats meet for the 80th time since 1981
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will return to conference play on Monday afternoon at Villanova.
Wednesday's matchup at Finneran Pavilion will tip off at 12 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Nick Mantegna and Harry Perretta on the call.
The Red Storm (11-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) breezed past New Haven, 67-47, in the team's non-conference finale on Wednesday night. St. John's finished non-league play with a 10-1 record, including nine straight wins to cap the out-of-league slate.
The victory marked head coach Joe Tartamella's 250th career win, making him the third active BIG EAST Women's Basketball Coach to reach the milestone at the same school, joining UConn's Geno Auriemma and Creighton's Jim Flanery.
Against New Haven, St. John's shot 49.1% percent (28-57) from the floor and won the battle on the boards, 37-30. The Red Storm led by as much as 20 points after the first half and as much as 22 in the second. The Johnnies limited the Chargers to just 25.0% shooting from beyond the arc.
Junior Brooke Moore led the team, finishing just shy of a double-double with 23 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. The junior shot 10-for-14 (71.4%) from the floor during the victory.
Senior Jailah Donald recorded a season-high 12 points off the bench, shooting 4-for-6 from the floor in 25 minutes of action.
St. John's and Villanova (9-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) will meet for the 80th time on Monday, the 31st time in Villanova, Pa. with the series dating back to Dec. 10, 1981. The Red Storm has won one of the last three meetings between the two teams, most recently getting edged out 66-64 last season on Jan. 18, 2025. The Johnnies had five players score in double figures with Kylie Lavelle and Skye Owen leading the charge with 13 points apiece.
Villanova enters the matchup on a seven-game win streak, most recently knocking off Seton Hall, 72-55, at home on Dec. 19. The Wildcats tallied their second BIG EAST win and currently rank second in the conference standings.
The Wildcats shot 44.1% (30-68) from the floor and outrebounded the Pirates, 41-36, in the contest. Villanova had two stand-out quarters, scoring 23 in the second before dropping 25 in the third to secure the win.
The victory was highlighted by a 20-point, seven rebound performance from Jasmine Bascoe and a 19-point outing for Ryanne Allen. The duo accounted for almost half of Villanova's total points. Brynn McCurry also had a strong game, dishing out eight assists and collecting five boards.
Bascoe is Villanova's leading scorer, averaging 18.2 points while chipping in 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game. McCurry leads the Wildcats down low, averaging 5.8 boards, 3.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 12.2 points per competition.
St. John's will take a short break before returning to play on Dec. 29 when it travels to Marquette for a 7:30 p.m. ET tip off on Monday. The Red Storm holds a 1-1 record against BIG EAST opponents this year.
