St. John’s to Open BIG EAST Slate against Creighton on Thursday

Red Storm riding six-game winning streak into conference play
QUEENS, N.Y. – Riding a six-game winning streak, the St. John's women's basketball team (7-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) will begin BIG EAST play on Thursday night against Creighton (2-4, 0-0 BIG EAST).

The Red Storm have captured six straight contests dating back to Nov. 11 heading into conference play, including a pair of wins at the Cayman Islands Classic over Thanksgiving week against Georgia Tech and Memphis. The Johnnies were the lone team in Grand Cayman to be named to the All-Tournament Team in Sa'Mya Wyatt and Brooke Moore.
Moore is the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, marking the first St. John's player to win the award since Unique Drake on Jan. 8, 2024. The junior averaged 21.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. The Kennesaw, Ga., native has registered three consecutive 20-plus point performances and a pair of double-doubles over the last three contests. Moore ranks top-five in the league in scoring (15.8 PPG) and blocks per game (1.4).
Offensively, St. John's shot 60.4 percent (32-53) from the field, its highest mark since the it shot 60.3 percent from the floor in the WBIT First Round victory over Florida on March 21, 2024. The Red Storm have emerged as one of the most efficient shooting teams in the country. The Johnnies currently rank 16th in NCAA Division I and atop the BIG EAST shooting 49.5 percent from the field. Wyatt ranks 14th (61.8%) and Moore sits 23rd (60.0%) nationally in field goal percentage. St. John's offense has been firing on all cylinders as of late. Over the last five games, the Johnnies have scored 78.8 points on 55.0 percent shooting from field goal range and 20.3 assists per game.
Shaulana Wagner has been one of the top distributors in the country averaging 6.4 assists per game, which leads the BIG EAST and ranks 13th in NCAA Division I. The Detroit native recorded 13 helpers in the win over Georgia Tech, which ranks fifth-most in NCAA Division I this season and the highest by a St. John's player in 14 years
St. John's and Creighton will meet on the hardwood for the 30th time on Thursday night. The Bluejays hold a 16-13 overall record over the Red Storm, dating back to 1997. Creighton has won the last five contests, dating back to Dec. 4, 2022 when the Johnnies outlasted the then-No. 13/14 Bluejays,66-62.
The Bluejays enter the contest with an 2-4 record after splitting in the UNLV Thanksgiving Turkey Tip-Off. Creighton suffered a 76-67 setback to the hosts, UNLV on Wednesday before rounding out the tournament with a dominant 86-62 victory over Northern Arizona on Friday. The Bluejays were picked to finish fifth, just ahead of the Johnnies in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' poll.
Neleigh Gessert, the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week is currently Creighton's leading scorer, averaging 11.5 points and 3.0 made 3-pointers per game. Grace Boffeli ranks second in the BIG EAST logging 8.5 rebounds per game. Kiani Lockett is also a player a to watch, dishing out 4.5 assists per contest, fourth in the league.
St. John's will remain at Carnesecca Arena for a Saturday afternoon conference battle with Providence on Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
