St. John’s Drops BIG EAST Opener to Creighton, 60-52

Brooke Moore recorded third double-double in four-game span on Thursday night
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Women's Basketball team (7-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell to Creighton (3-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) in its BIG EAST opener on Thursday night, 60-52.
The two conference foes were never separated by more than four points until the final minutes of the contest. The game featured 10 ties and eight lead changes. The Bluejays engineered a pivotal 10-0 run late in the game to pick up a road win in Queens.
Fresh off her first-ever BIG EAST Player of the Week honor, Brooke Moore continued to fill up the box score tallying her third double-double in the last four games. The junior added 14 points and matched a career-best with 11 rebounds.
Sa'Mya Wyatt finished in double-figures for the fifth time in the last six contests adding 16 points. The sophomore shot 7-for-13 from the floor. Shaulana Wagner chipped in 10 points, seven boards and four assists.
St. John's shot 80 percent from the free throw line going 12-for-15 from the charity stripe on Thursday night at Carnesecca Arena.
Creighton's Kennedy Townsend led all scorers with a career-high 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Red Storm and the Bluejays traded triples through the first four minutes of the opening frame. Moore gave St. John's its first lead of the outing, converting on a three-point play, 8-6, with 5:10 remaining in the opening stanza. The Johnnies created a small four-point cushion to end the first quarter, 14-10, with Moore and Wagner combining for the St. John's final 11 points of the frame.
In the second stanza, Creighton engineered a 10-2 to claim a 20-16 edge. Wyatt fueled the Red Storm tallying the next three buckets for the Johnnies to bring the scoreline to a stalemate, 22-22. After Creighton regained control, Janeya Grant knocked down a contested 3-point to leap back in front, 25-24. Wyatt closed the half with a turnaround jumper to carry a 27-24 advantage into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Bluejays broke through with back-to-back three-pointers, jumping ahead 30-27, after a scoreless opening four minutes for both squads. In the final minutes of the third, the Red Storm went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe as Creighton held a two-point edge, 38-36.
In the final quarter, Moore grabbed an offensive board and drove through the lane, getting a sweeping lay-up to fall through contact to take back the lead, 41-40. With just under three minutes remaining in the contest, Creighton began to pull away with the largest lead of the game after Kennedy Townsend nailed back-to-back triples to give the visitors their largest lead of the night, 53-43. Moore responded for the Red Storm in the final minute and a half, cutting the lead down to a five-point deficit, 53-48. In the final minute, the Bluejays pulled away at the line as the Johnnies drop their first contest since Nov. 7, snapping a six-game winning streak.
St. John's will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Providence for another BIG EAST battle at 2 p.m.
