Track and Field to Host Youree Spence Garcia Invitational

The Red Storm will open the 2025-26 indoor season at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team will kick off its 2025-26 campaign by hosting the Youree Spence Garcia Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
The Red Storm is set to compete at Ocean Breeze for the first time during the indoor season. Saturday's meet being the only indoor meet the Johnnies host.
At last year's edition of the invite, St. John's enjoyed five event wins along with 13 additional podium finishers. Director of Track and Field Aliann Pompey returns three of those five event winners and eight of the 13 podium finishers.
NCAA All-American Honorable Mention and 2025 BIG EAST Outdoor Most Outstanding Field Performer Jamora Alves is set to make her season debut in the ring, participating in both the shot put and weight throw. Alves won the shot put at last year's meet with a toss of 14.84m (48 ft 8.25 in).
World Athletics Championship qualifier Nora Haugen highlights the 600m field, stepping down in distance. A year ago, the senior was the top collegiate finisher in the event at the Youree Spence Garcia Invite. The Norwegian holds the program record in the 800m with a time of 2:02.68.
After claiming a silver medal in the 400m and helping the Johnnies earn a gold medal in the 4x400m relay at the 2025 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championship, Chinenye Onuorah is scheduled to race in the quarter mile at Saturday's competition. The graduate student holds a personal best of 52.70 in the event set at the 2025 NCAA East Regional Championships in May.
Coming off a successful cross country season, Naiara Garcia transitions from the trails to the track and will toe the line in the 1K. After winning the event in personal-best fashion by posting a time of 3:00.20, the Málaga, Spain, native is set to defend her title this weekend.
Four freshmen will make their Johnnie debuts on Saturday, as Jayla Criss, Nia-Ruby Forbes-Agyepong, Nyla Branch and Tatiana Camilo will compete for the first time as members of the Red Storm.
Following Saturday's action, a portion of the squad is set to attend the Wagner Seahawk Shootout on Friday, Dec. 12, back at Ocean Breeze. Next Friday's meet will be the final competition before the team breaks until late January.
