St. John’s Shines at South Florida Invitational

Red Storm notched four event wins and 10 top-10 finishes
TAMPA, Fla. – The St. John's track and field team continued to keep strong form during the outdoor season at the South Florida Invitational on Saturday afternoon, at the USF Track and Field Complex.
The Johnnies secured three individual event victories, as well as 10 finishes inside the top-10. The 4x400-meter relay also captured a first-place finish with a season-best time of 3-minutes, 36.22 seconds.
A pair of senior standouts won their respective events, as Jamora Alves and Chinenye Josephine Onourah won the discus and 400-meter dash. Alves delivered a season-best in the ring with a winning throw of 52.03m (170 feet, 8 inches), a mark that ranks atop the BIG EAST. Onourah had her best race of the outdoor season in the quarter mile, stopping the clock in 53.27 seconds for the fastest time of the competition and in the conference.
Sophomore sensation Naiara Garcia-Moreno rounds out the individual winners, claiming the top spot in the 800-meter run with a winning time of 2:03.87. The Spanish native set an outdoor personal-best which ranks fourth all-time in program history, second in the league this season and 14th in the NCAA East Region.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji recorded a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.03m (19 feet, 9.50 inches). Fia Viklund used a 12.17m (39 feet, 11.25 inches) attempt to place eighth in the triple jump. Rounding out the jumps, Ruth Smith tied for 10th place, clearing a 1.55m (5 feet, 1 inch) bar on her first attempt.
In the hammer throw, Desiree Pagan and Juliet Smith finished seventh and 10th, respectively. Pagan used a personal-best toss of 50.44m (165 feet, 6 inches) to move into third in the BIG EAST ranks. Smith recorded a third-round toss of 43.83m (143 feet, 9 inches) to place two Johnnies in the top-10.
Rounding out the top-10 finishes was Maddie Kelso-Heap in the 400-meter hurdles. The junior stopped the clock in a personal-best time of 1:00.35 to place seventh, marking the second-best mark in the conference this season.
St. John's alumna and 13-time BIG EAST champion Leah Anderson won the 200-meters with a time of 23.09.
The Johnnies are scheduled for split action next weekend. A portion of the squad will make its way to Storrs, Conn. for the UConn Northeast Challenge from April 17-18. The rest of team will travel to Rutgers for the 2026 ECAC Outdoor Championships from April 17-19.
