Red Storm collect pair of wins as 4x400-meter relay shines
STORRS, Conn. (April 19, 2026) – The St. John's track and field team competed at the UConn Northeast Challenge over the weekend, grabbing a pair of event wins and numerous personal bests.
Naiara Garcia-Moreno and the 4x400-meter team each won their respective event. This extends Garcia-Moreno's undefeated streak for the outdoor season.
Action from the George J. Sheraman Family Sports Complex began on Friday with select field events, starting with Maja Henry in the discus. The junior used a first-round toss of 41.70 meters (136 feet, 9 inches) to take ninth place.
On Saturday, Garica-Moreno began day with a win in the 1,500-meter run. The sophomore stopped the clock in 4 minutes, 27.71 seconds to claim her fifth win of the outdoor season to remain undefeated.
In the sprints, Kettia Ambrose placed third in the 100-meter dash. The juniors set a personal-best mark of 11.97 seconds and currently sits within the top 10 in the BIG EAST rankings.
Her teammate Jerese Allwood also set a personal-best in the 100-meter hurdles. The sophomore crossed the line in 14.85 seconds to place sixth overall, while Nia-Ruby Forbes-Agyepong finished right bind Allwood in 14.72.
One of the highlights of the meet came in the hammer ring, where Desiree Pagan unleashed a 2.30 meter personal-best to place third. In the second round, the graduate student used a 52.76m (173 feet, 1 inch) heave to claim the top spot in the BIG EAST, narrowly edging out a competitor from UConn.
The 4x400-meter relay quartet of Ambrose, Nyla Henderson, Leilani Robinson and Chinenye Onourah ran a season-best time of 3:35.36 to claim the top podium spot. The time currently sits first in the conference and the 19th best performance by a Division I "A" relay in the East Region this season.
St. John's will prepare for the longest running track meet in North America at the 130th Penn Relays. Competition from historic Franklin Field is set to being on April 23.
