QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team is set to compete at the UConn Northeast Challenge over the weekend. Action from the George J. Sheraman Family Sports Complex begins on Friday with select field events and wraps up on Saturday afternoon. Live results can be found here.
Last weekend the Johnnies turned in a strong showing at the South Florida Invitational, hosted by USF. Red Storm secured three individual event victories, as well as 10 finishes inside the top-10. The 4x400-meter relay also captured a first-place finish with a season-best time of 3-minutes, 36.22 seconds.
Jamora Alves has been dominant all season, and last week was no different. Alves became the first Johnnie to earn an athlete of the week honor in back-to-back weeks since Lead Anderson did so in January of 2020. This is the fifth time the senior was named the BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week during her career.
The senior delivered a season-best performance in the ring with a winning throw of 52.03m (170 feet, 8 inches), nearly six meters further than second place. The mark that ranks atop the BIG EAST and 29th in NCAA East Region.
This weekend, fellow senior standout Cassandra Lemus-Sodji will look to build on her momentum in the short sprints, competing in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.
Also on the track, Naiara Garcia-Moreno continues to pace the Red Storm in the middle-distance events. The sophomore has consistently finished at or near the top of the podium all season in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs. This weekend, she aims to improve on her season best 1,500m time of 4:25.38.
Red Storm will participate in the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays this weekend, aiming to improve its conference leading time in the 4x400m.
Following this weekend, St. John's will make its way to the 130th Penn Relays. Competition from Franklin Field is set to being on April 23.
