Red Storm will be back in action on Sunday when it takes on Butler at Madison Square Garden
STORRS, Conn. – The St. John's women's basketball team (13-11, 3-10 BIG EAST) fell to No. 7/7 UConn (23-3, 14-0 BIG EAST) on the road at Gampel Pavilion, 78-40.
The Huskies recorded a wire-to-wire victory in Storrs on Wednesday night, shooting 53.7 percent from the floor.
Lashae Dwyer delivered her 19th double-figure scoring performance of the season chipping in 11 points. The senior recorded four steals and leads in the BIG EAST in that category with 71 swipes on the season.
Ber'Nyah Mayo was the second Red Storm player to finish in double-figures and dished out a game-high five assists on Wednesday night. The graduate student has reached double-digits in nine of her last 10 games and dished out five or more assists in four of her last seven appearances.
UConn's Azzi Fudd led all scorers with 34 points on 13-for-22 (59.0%) shooting from the floor and 8-of-14 (57.1%) from 3-point range.
In the opening minutes, Phoenix Gedeon recorded the first two basket of the game as the Red Storm got out to a 4-2 lead, before the Huskies responded with an 11-0 run. Out of a timeout, Mayo drilled a deep triple from way downtown to halt the Huskies' spurt. After UConn responded with a pair of triples, Mayo and Dwyer cashed in from downtown to trim it to a six-point game, 19-13, with 1:08 remaining. The Huskies tallied the final five points of the opening frame to carry an 11-point cushion, 23-14, after the first frame.
In the second stanza as the Huskies continued to expand their advantage, Jade Blagrove knocked down a pull-up jumper to bring the run to a close. UConn strung together another spurt before Mayo cashed in on a crafty step back mid-ranger jumper. Jayda Brown splashed a triple to conclude the scoring for St. John's as it trailed UConn, 45-20, heading into the halftime break.
Jailah Donald opened the second half scoring with a runner in the paint. Dwyer dialed home a 3-pointer before completing a scoop and score and drew the foul to finish the and one a few plays later. The Huskies controlled the remainder of the frame as Fudd remained scorching hot hitting five triples in the stanza alone to grow the UConn lead to 68-32.
In the final quarter with the Huskies in command the Red Storm converted 6-of-6 attempts from the charity stripe. Freshman Janeya Grant finished a mid-range jumper in the paint with 1:47 remaining. UConn tallied the final bucket of the evening to seal the victory at home.
