St. John’s Dominates Butler at Madison Square Garden on Johnnies Day, 65-43

NEW YORK- The St. John's women's basketball team (14-11, 4-10 BIG EAST) blew past Butler (14-14, 4-11 BIG EAST) on Sunday evening at Madison Square Garden to sweep a Johnnies Day doubleheader, 65-43.
The Red Storm strung together a dominant third quarter to pull away outscoring the Bulldogs 22-6 during the frame. The Johnnies limited the Bulldogs to just two made field goals in the third stanza as it brought its lead to as many as 26.

Dwyer won the footrace to a loose ball and coasted in for the fastbreak lay-up. After Butler scored the next five points to take an early 5-4 advantage, Dwyer collected a pair of offensive boards before the third time was the charm as she cashed in from beyond-the-arc. Skye Owen knocked down a corner triple to close out a 9-0 scoring run as the cushion ballooned to 13-5. The Bulldogs responded with four straight before a pair of makes from Mayo at the charity stripe gave the Red Storm a six-point edge, 15-9, at the conclusion of the first.
In the second stanza, Gedeon got going offensively draining a long two-point jumper her first of six points over a 2:23 span, as the Johnnies advantage expanded to as many as 13, 26-13. Off a turnover, Jailah Donald swished a triple in transition to bring the lead to its highest total in the first half, 31-17, with 2:02 to play. Butler ended the half on a 6-0 spurt as St. John's led by eight, 31-23, at the break.

Gedeon finished a three-point play that ignited a 16-2 scoring run. St. John's then caught fire from 3-point range making three triples over a 2:20 stretch capped off by a splash from Donald as the Red Storm lead grew to its largest of the night, 53-27. St. John's outscored Butler, 22-6, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for 5:20 during the frame.
During the fourth quarter, Kylie Lavelle opened the scoring with a mid-range jumper. Butler responded tallied an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 18, 55-37. Dwyer then turned it up offensively getting back-to-back 3-pointers to fall inside Madison Square Garden. The Miami transfer's fourth triple of the night marked a career-best as the Johnnies advantage expanded 61-39 to 5:06 left to play. The Johnnies coasted the rest of the way to pick-up a pivotal home win.
The Red Storm will travel to face No. 24/25 Creighton in Omaha at D.J. Sokol Arena on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
