St. John’s to Host Butler at Madison Square Garden on Johnnies Day

Red Storm will play in a doubleheader with the men’s basketball team at the World’s Most Famous Arena
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the second-straight season, the St. John's women's basketball program will play inside Madison Square Garden when it hosts Butler on Sunday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m.
The BIG EAST contest from Midtown Manhattan will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Drew Casey and Edona Thaqi on the call from "The World's Most Famous Arena". Live Stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's University will celebrate its third annual Johnnies Day on Sunday. The school's proud contributions and rich history dating back to 1870 will be recognized and remembered with a doubleheader at The Garden. Following the St. John's men's basketball team's contest against Creighton, the St. John's women's basketball team will take on Butler at approximately 5:30 p.m. The two teams hold a combined 4-0 record on Johnnies Day, with the men's basketball team earning a pair of ranked wins over then-No. 20/17 Providence in 2023 and then-No. 15/15 Creighton last year.
The women's basketball program will play its 18th-ever game on the hallowed hardwood of "The Mecca" and its first-ever against Butler at the venue, on Sunday. St. John's holds a 10-7 overall record at MSG. The Red Storm women's program played its first-ever contest at The Garden 21 years ago in 2004.
Head Coach Joe Tartamella was a graduate assistant and assistant coach during the program's early games at The Garden and has been on the sidelines of all 17 contests. The 13th year head coach holds an all-time record of 4-2 at the World's Most Famous Arena.
In last year's contest at MSG, the Red Storm clawed out a thrilling victory over Villanova, 51-46, to open BIG EAST play. Jillian Archer totaled 15 points and 14 rebounds against the Wildcats. The graduate student was efficient from the field, shooting 7-for-8 from the floor.
In their last outing, the Johnnies fell to No. 7/7 UConn, 78-40, in Storrs, Conn., on Wednesday night. The Huskies recorded a wire-to-wire victory at Gampel Pavilion, shooting 53.7 percent from the floor.
The Red Storm forced UConn into 18 turnovers on Wednesday night. The squad has now forced 15 or more turnovers in a single contest in four straight games and 18 times total this season.
Lashae Dwyer put together her 19th double-figure scoring performance of the season, chipping in 11 points on Wednesday. The senior recorded four steals and leads in the BIG EAST and ranks 12th in the nation in the category with 71 swipes on the season. Additionally, the Toronto native sits 15th in NCAA Divison I in steals per game (2.9).
Ber'Nyah Mayo was the second member of the Red Storm to finish double-figures and dished out a game-high five assists on Wednesday night. The graduate student has reached double-digit points in nine of her last 10 games and has dished out five or more assists in four of her last seven appearances.
St. John's and Butler are set to meet for the 22nd time in the all-time series and for the first and only time during the regular season at MSG on Sunday evening. The Red Storm lead the series 16-5 and hold an 8-2 record at home against the Bulldogs. In its last nine games against Butler, St. John's holds an 8-1 advantage, winning eight straight matchups before falling in Indiana last season.
