St. John’s Drops a Pair of Contests to USF and Penn State

The Red Storm drop both games on day two of The Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF
TAMPA, Fla. – The St. John's softball team (2-6-1) dropped a pair of contests to USF and Penn State on Saturday at The Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF in Tampa. Fla.
The Red Storm fell to USF, 5-0, before dropping the latter contest to Penn State, 4-0.
Ana Serafinko put together a solid start for the Johnnies against USF (8-2), punching out six batters in 5.1 innings of work while giving up five runs. The two-way player also tallied a pinch-hit single against Penn State
Freshman Jailynn Banda drew her first career start inside the circle against Penn State (3-6), tossing the full seven innings and giving up four runs (three earned) while striking out five batters.
London Jarrard paced the St. John's offense, tallying a single in each of the contests.
Game 1
USF's offense struck early in the day's opening contest when Alex Wilkes hit an RBI single into right-center to put the Bulls up 1-0. St. John's starter Serafinko limited the damage, recording her second strikeout of the inning to strand two runners.
After a scoreless second and third, the Red Storm put two runners on when Madison Konopka reached on an error and Jarrard slapped a single into left in the top of the fourth. However, Bulls' starter Payton Dixon recorded the final two outs to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of USF.
Camille Ortiz-Martinez added to the Bull's advantage in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a solo home run to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Bulls added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase its advantage to five.
In the top of the seventh, Dixon retired the Johnnies 1-2-3 to complete the shutout and secure the 5-0 victory for USF.
Game 2
After a scoreless opening frame, Penn State threatened to score when a Maddie Gordon double put runners on second and third with one out. However, Banda showed poise, getting the next two Nittany Lions to strike out swinging to keep the score 0-0.
Cassidy Stouffer supplied the Red Storm with a scoring opportunity of its own in the home half of the second after being plunked by a pitch and then promptly swiping second base. Penn State's starter Abigail Britton neutralized the threat, retiring the next three batters to keep the contest scoreless.
Penn State pieced together a pair of base hits and a Brooke Klosowicz RBI groundout brought the first run of the ballgame home to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
The Nittany Lions tacked on another run in the following inning after Michela Barbanente homered to left-center, 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Red Storm threatened, putting two on with no outs after Jess Bianco reached on an error and Jarrard singled, but Britton recorded three consecutive outs to hold Penn State's two-run advantage.
Banda kept the game within striking distance for the Johnnies, tossing a scoreless fifth and a 1-2-3 sixth while punching out a pair of batters to keep the score at 2-0 after six innings of play.
In the top of the seventh, Penn State added a pair of insurance runs, making the score 4-0.
The 4-0 score became the final as the Red Storm offense was unable to get anything going in the home half of the seventh.
St. John's will wrap up its time at The Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF tomorrow when they take on either Loyola-Chicago or USF. The time is to be decided based on the results of the following contest.
