St. John’s Drops Contest to Seton Hall, 66-57

Lashae Dwyer scored a team-high 17 points
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team (14-13, 4-12 BIG EAST) dropped its annual Pink Game against Seton Hall (19-8, 11-5 BIG EAST) on Sunday at Carnesecca, 66-57.
The Johnnies cut it to a five-point game at the halftime break before the Pirates caught fire from beyond-the-arc to start the second half hitting four 3-pointers to run away with the victory. Three players finished in double-figures and the Red Storm shot 87.5 percent (14-16) from the free throw line.
Lashae Dwyer scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting in 20 minutes of action on Sunday night. The senior has scored 17 or more points in each of her last three appearances and tacked on three steals and six boards during Sunday's contest.
Ber'Nyah Mayo tallied 15 points and a season-high seven rebounds against the Pirates. The graduate student went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line tying a career-high. Kylie Lavelle added 10 points for her 11th double-figure scoring out of the season.
Seton Hall's Faith Masonius (16), Iyanna Lops (16) and Savannah Catalon (19) paced the Pirates offensively combining 51 of the squad's 66 points.
The Pirates jumped out to a 5-0 lead, Mayo found Donald in the corner for a 3-pointer to open the scoring for the Red Storm. Midway through the opening stanza, Gedeon drove to the tin at the end of the shot clock and finished the lay-in. As Seton Hall held a narrow edge, Dwyer tallied a steal and score with 40 seconds left in the first as the Pirates carried a 16-11 advantage after the opening quarter.
Dwyer opened the second stanza by sinking a mid-range jumper to close within two, 15-13. The Pirates moved ahead sinking a 3-pointer as their lead grew to double-digits, 24-14. The Johnnies rallied rattling off eight straight points to make it a one possession game with two minutes left in the half. Kaydan Lawson capitalized on from beyond-the-arc to take a 27-22 lead into the locker room.
The Pirates came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders making four 3-pointers to separate themselves during the 12-0 scoring run. Seton Hall continued to dominate the third expanding its advantage to as many as 21, 47-26, after closing out a 20-4 run to open the third. St. John's responded with a run of its own. Mayo knocked down a corner triple before Dwyer caused a turnover and cashed in on the fastbreak lay-up to cut the deficit to 14, 47-33 with 1:39 left in the third. Seton Hall took a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter.
During the final frame, the Johnnies orchestrated an 11-2 run capped off by a fastbreak finish from Mayo to chop the deficit to 11, 60-49, with just under three minutes to play. Seton Hall responded with a mid-range jumper to halt the Johnnies run and went onto captured its 19th win of the season.
The Red Storm will host Senior Night on Wednesday for its home finale against Georgetown at 7 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
