Dominant 30-Point Third Quarter Propels St. John’s Past Georgetown in Senior Night Rout, 83-49

Red Storm dominated the Hoyas in second half outscoring them 54-15 over the final 20 minutes
QUEENS, N.Y.– After trailing at the break, the St. John's women's basketball team (15-13, 5-12 BIG EAST) exploded for 54 second half points to blow past Georgetown (11-17, 4-13 BIG EAST), 83-49, on Senior Night.
An explosive 30-point third quarter highlighted by an 18-2 scoring run to open the latter half propelled the Red Storm past the Hoyas quickly erasing the five-point halftime deficit dominating Georgetown, 54-15, over the final 20 minutes.
The Johnnies knocked down 13 triples in the decisive victory tying their second highest total in program history and most since Feb. 6, 2022 when St. John's routed Xavier, 96-62. The Red Storm shot 52.9 percent from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes and nailed 10 triples in the second half.
Lashae Dwyer tied a career-high 25 points in her final game inside Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night. The senior shot 10-for-18 (55.6%) and 4-for-8 (50%) from 3-point range, her four makes from beyond-the-arc mark the second time in the last four games reaching the career-high. The Toronto native logged five steals moving her into seventh all-time with 85 this season and the most by a Red Storm player in 30 years.
Ber'Nyah Mayo also made best of her final game in Queens going off for a season-high 20 points and a game-high five assists. The graduate student was efficient shooting 7-for-11 (63.6%) from 3-point land.
Janeya Grant had her best performance of her freshman season catching fire from beyond-the-arc nailing three triples to finish with nine points. Skye Owen chipped in nine points and a game-high five helpers.
Phoenix Gedeon added eight points on 4-of-7 (57.1%) shooting and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
The Red Storm dished out 19 assists and committed only eight turnovers at Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies outpaced the Hoyas 19-0 in fastbreak points. The 83 points were the program's highest total in a regulation BIG EAST game since Feb. 6, 2022, when Head Coach Joe Tartamella became the winningest coach in St. John's Women's Basketball history.
Mayo recorded the first bucket of the game finishing a drive to the hoop. Dwyer applied full court pressure batting a pass away before corralling the loose ball and darting to the hoop for a lay-in. Later in the quarter, Gedeon finished a strong drive to the basketflying for the score. The two sides traded baskets throughout the opening frame with neither side leading by more than a single possession. Skye Owen swished a near halfcourt heave as the buzzer sounded but the replay revealed it wasn't off in time and the Hoyas carried a one-point edge, 14-13, after one.
In the second quarter after the Hoyas pulled ahead by six, Dwyer sunk one from beyond-the-arc to complete a 5-0 solo run to cut it to one, 22-21. Grant drilled a triple from top of the key as the Hoyas continued to nudge ahead. Georgetown nailed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to take a 34-29 advantage into the break.
When the teams came out for the second half the tides completely turned. In the third quarter, the Red Storm came out firing on all cylinders scoring the first 10 points to retake the lead as triples from Jailah Donald and Dwyer set the tone for the offensive fireworks. The dominant run to start the latter half stretched to 18-2 as Grant and Owen cashed in on makes from beyond-the-arc as the advantage ballooned to double-digits. Grant cashed in once again from long-range and Lavelle capped it off with St. John's sixth 3-pointer of the third quarter as the lead expanded 59-41. The Red Storm outscored Georgetown in the stanza, 30-7.
Dwyer continued to pile it on at the start of the final frame starting it off with her third triple of the evening. St. John's continued to deflate Georgetown's offensive attack holding the visitors to 23.8 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes. Dwyer scored eight of the Johnnies' 11 points to end the game capping off her dominant performance with a steal and score at the rim to complete a 34-point rout of the Hoyas.
Before the game Dwyer, Gedeon, Mayo, Ariana Vanderhoop and Jade Blagrove were honored alongside their families for their contributions to the program.
St. John's will travel to Chicago for its regular season finale at DePaul on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET from Wintrust Arena.
