NEW YORK – Following an 11-point week, St. John's lacrosse attackman Brian Kelly was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman defenseman Quinn Falasca was tabbed to the conference's weekly honor roll, the conference announced on Monday.
Kelly becomes the second Johnnie to earn Player of the Week honors this season, joining Adrian Nowak, who won the award following his 10-point explosion against NJIT on Feb. 8.
The second-year captain stuffed the stat sheet in two games this week, totaling 11 points on eight goals and three assists. In the Red Storm's 15-9 win over Quinnipiac on Tuesday, the senior scored four times and dished out a helper, tallying three points in the fourth quarter to help the Johnnies close out the Bobcats with a 6-2 run. On Saturday against Hofstra, Kelly found the back of the net four more times and added two assists.
The Red Hook, N.Y., native has at least five points in all four of the Johnnies' games this year and leads the team with 22 points and 11 goals. His 11 assists are second most on the team, only trailing Nowak's 13 helpers. The 11 points this week give Kelly 158 for his career, needing just one more point to tie Mike Madsen for fifth on the program's all-time scoring list.
This is Kelly's second BIG EAST weekly recognition this season, having previously earned a spot on the honor roll following his six-point performance in the team's season-opening win over NJIT on Feb. 8. The second-year captain was previously tabbed BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week following his five-point effort in the Red Storm's 13-9 win over Marquette on March 30, 2024
Falasca receives his first conference recognition following a stellar week in the Red Storm's defense. On Tuesday, the freshman was instrumental in holding the Bobcats to just nine goals, scooping five groundballs and causing four turnovers. The four forced giveaways are the most by a Red Storm player in a single game this season. On Saturday, Falasca picked up six loose balls and was the primary defender on Hofstra's leading scorer, Joe Madsen, holding him to just one goal.
Through four games this season, the Cornelius, N.C., native leads St. John's with 19 groundballs and is second on the team with seven caused turnovers. Falasca has at least five loose balls in three games this year.
Kelly, Falasca and the Johnnies will be back in action on Friday when Jacksonville makes the trip to Queens. Faceoff from Belson Stadium is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
