St. John’s Drops Midweek Contest at Rutgers, 21-11

Bobby Seel and Jayson Cardenas each had three points for the Johnnies
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Despite three points from Bobby Seel and Jayson Cardenas, the St. John's lacrosse team fell to Rutgers on Wednesday, 21-11, at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.
The Johnnies (2-6) took a 4-3 lead early, but the Scarlet Knights orchestrated an 8-0 second quarter run and never looked back, earning the victory in the 31st all-time meeting between the two programs.
Cardenas tallied multiple points for the fifth consecutive game, tying his season-high with three points on two goals and an assist, giving the freshman 10 goals and 14 points on the season.
Seel netted his first hat trick of the season to bring his goal total this season into double digits with 10. The three goals also extend his team-best point streak to 24 games. The senior midfielder has recorded six consecutive multi-point performances.
Seel and Cardenas become the fourth and fifth Red Storm players to eclipse the 10-goal mark in 2025.
Dan Koban registered the first multipoint stat line of his four-year career, earning a pair of goals. Koban netted the Red Storm's first score of the game, the fourth time in eight games he has struck first for St. John's.
Mitch Campbell also recorded multiple points for the fourth time of his rookie campaign, adding a goal and an assist for his 14th and 15th points of the season.
Attackmen Brian Kelly and Adrian Nowak each tallied a score. Kelly has a team-best 29 points and 18 goals and has found the back of the net in 10 straight games dating back to 2024. Nowak's goal gives him 25 points on the season, only trailing Kelly for the team lead.
Senior Evan Stowe recorded the second point of his career, netting a fourth-quarter goal.
Patrick Scarborough made 12 saves between the pipes, marking the fifth time he recorded double-digit stops in six starts.
Collin Kelly and Colin Kurdyla each scored four goals for the Scarlet Knights (4-4), while Kurdyla added a pair of helpers. Shane Murphy had a six-point outing with three scores and three assists. Netminder Cardin Stoller made eight saves in the win.
Rutgers won the opening faceoff and scored the game's first goal eight seconds into the first quarter. The Johnnies responded with two straight to take its first lead of the afternoon. Koban bounced one into the twine to get St. John's on the board, and Cardenas found the back of the net less than two minutes later. The Scarlet Knights scored twice to take a 3-2 lead, but Bobby Seel answered late in the quarter to knot the game at 3-3 after the first.
Seel's snipe from 17 yards out gave the Johnnies the lead back early in the second frame, 4-3, but the Scarlet Knights rattled off eight consecutive scores to take an 11-4 advantage at the end of the opening 30 minutes.
The teams traded blows to start the third quarter. Rutgers struck first to open up an eight-score advantage before Cardenas got his second of the afternoon to make it 12-5. After another Rutgers score, Campbell netted one on the run and Koban found the back of the net for the second time, bringing the Johnnies within six, 13-7. The Scarlet Knights tallied the game's next five scores to go up by 11, 18-7. Seel's third of the day at the end of the third quarter ended the run.
Kelly scored an impressive turnaround goal, and Nowak found the upper corner in the fourth, but Rutgers tacked on three more scores. Stowe's man-up snipe in the last two minutes ended a high-scoring affair in The Garden State.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Saturday when Mercer makes the trip to Queens. Faceoff from Belson Stadium is set for 11:30 a.m.
