NEW YORK – The top-seeded St. John's men's basketball team (28-4) will make its second straight appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals on Friday when it faces fifth-seeded Marquette (23-9) at Madison Square Garden.
Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. inside The World's Most Famous Arena. A national telecast will air on FOX with Gus Johnson and Jim Jackson on the call and Kristina Pink reporting from the sideline. Westwood One Sports will carry the national radio broadcast with Scott Graham and PJ Carlesimo.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM radio channel 139 or 201 and via the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive season after moving past ninth-seeded Butler, 78-57, in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Johnnies opened the game on an 18-3 scoring run and never looked back, recording their largest margin of victory in a BIG EAST Tournament game since March 9, 2010 when St. John's defeated Connecticut, 73-51.
After being named St. John's first BIG EAST Player of the Year since 1986, RJ Luis Jr. led all scorers with 20 points in the victory over the Bulldogs. The junior has scored 20-plus points in four-straight contests, marking a first by a Red Storm player since Shamorie Ponds recorded seven straight 20-plus point games from Jan. 1, 2019 to Jan. 30, 2019.
Just one game removed from tallying the first triple-double at St. John's in the 21st century, Kadary Richmond nearly went back-to-back, stuffing the box score with 15 points and game-highs of nine assists and eight rebounds.
Aaron Scott logged a 15-point effort on Thursday, shooting 6-for-10 from the floor and 3-of-6 from beyond-the-arc. The Spring, Texas native registered a career-high five steals, the most by a Johnnie in a BIG EAST Tournament game since Marcus Hatten logged the same number on March 9, 2002.
The Red Storm's defensive held a BIG EAST foe to 70 points or fewer for the 15th time this season. St. John's stifled the Bulldogs to shoot just 34.5 percent (19-55 FG) from the field. The Johnnies also outscored the Bulldogs 15-0 in fastbreak points and 44-18 in points in the paint.
The Red Storm will make its 13th BIG EAST Tournament semifinal appearance on Friday. The Johnnies hold a 5-7 record in semifinal games and will meet Marquette on the stage for the first time.
Winning five of its last eight games, No. 25/23 Marquette has a 23-9 overall record and posted a 13-7 mark in BIG EAST games during the regular season. The fifth-seeded Golden Eagles have reached the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals for the sixth time in program history.
In the tournament's quarterfinals on March 13, Marquette recovered from a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat Xavier, 89-87. The Golden Eagles made 14-of-33 three-pointers as Kam Jones led the squad with 28 points and five assists.
St. John's prevailed in both meetings against Marquette this season, winning on Feb. 4 at Madison Square Garden as Richmond totaled 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in a 70-64 victory. On Saturday in Milwaukee, St. John's came away with an 86-84 win in overtime behind Zuby Ejiofor's game winning bucket at the buzzer and RJ Luis' team-high 28 points.
The winner of Friday's first semifinal will advance to the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on FOX. The Johnnies will look to make their first title game appearance since 2000, when it was last crowned BIG EAST Tournament Champions.
