St. John’s Takes Both Games of a Doubleheader Against Butler

The Red Storm earn the series win after taking the final two games of the weekend
INDIANAPOLIS – The St. John's softball team (23-9-1, 5-1) took both games of a doubleheader against Butler to earn the series win on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm started the day by rallying to score four unanswered runs to take down the Bulldogs, 5-4. In the latter contest, the Johnnies routed Butler (17-9, 6-2) by a score of 8-2 to win the series after dropping the opening game yesterday.
Ana Serafinko tossed the final two innings of the first game before throwing a complete game in the second contest. The junior earned her third save and 10th win after tossing nine combined innings. Serafinko allowed one hit and struck out four batters in two scoreless relief frames in game one before giving up just two earned runs on six hits while punching out nine batters in the latter contest. The Chino Hills, Calif., product now has racked up 162 punchouts and holds a 2.21 ERA in 98 innings pitched this year.
Senior London Jarrard reached the 200-career hit milestone in the day's opening contest with an RBI single to center field in the first inning. The shortstop leads the team with a .420 batting average, five home runs and 33 RBIs.
Jess Bianco led the squad tallying four hits between the two contests, producing three singles and the first triple of her career. The center fielder raised her batting average to .412 and has totaled 36 runs scored and 15 RBIs in 2025.
Elanna Lysiak delivered the game-winning hit for the Red Storm in the first contest with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning. Lysiak totaled three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored between the two games. The junior is now batting .344 and ranks second on the team with 27 RBIs.
Anese Thompson drilled her second home run of the season with a two-run shot in the first inning of the latter game. Thompson finished the day with three combined hits and two RBIs.
Natalie Casto picked up a hit in each contest and drove home three runs in the two contests. The senior is off to a hot start this season, batting .297 with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
Game 1
The Johnnies did not take long to grab the lead in the opening contest when Bianco led off by pulling a triple down the right-field line before Jarrard recorded her 200th career hit with an RBI single into center field, 1-0.
Game one starter Loreley Francia made quick work of Butler in the bottom of the first, sitting the Bulldogs down 1-2-3 to hold St. John's one-run advantage after an inning of play.
In the second and third, Francia and Butler's starter Katie Petran exchanged blank frames to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Red Storm after three innings of play.
Butler cracked the run column in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs on a Kieli Ryan double and a pair of singles by Cate Lehner and Hailey Conger, 4-1.
St. John's responded in the top of the fifth when Bianco and Jarrard strung together back-to-back singles, putting runners on the corners with one out. Lysiak then drove a double into right-center, bringing home Bianco to cut into Butler's lead, 4-2.
After Francia tossed a scoreless bottom of the fifth, the St. John's offense went back to work, with Celia Macari hitting a lead-off double off the left-field wall. An out later, Casto lined a single off of the third baseman's mitt, allowing a run to come across, 4-3. Madison Konopka then lined a single back up the middle and Jarrard was intentionally walked, loading the bases with two outs for Lysiak who delivered a two-RBI single through the left side to give the Red Storm a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Serafinko entered the circle in relief of Francia and made her presence felt, punching out three batters to hold the Johnnies' one-run edge.
Serafinko closed out the contest in the bottom of the seventh, working around a one-out single to seal the 5-4 victory for the Red Storm.
Game 2
St. John's struck early again in the latter contest when Lysiak started a two-out rally by drawing a walk before Thompson drilled a two-run home run to center field to give the Red Storm a 2-0 advantage.
Serafinko kept the momentum going inside the circle, tossing a scoreless bottom of the first and second inning to keep the score at 2-0.
The Bulldogs plated its first run in the bottom of the third when Leigh Vande Hei scored on a wild pitch after doubling earlier in the frame, 2-1.
The Red Storm answered in the top of the fourth when Casto drilled an RBI single to center field to bring home Cassidy Stouffer, who doubled to lead off the frame, 3-1. After Casto advanced to second on a wild pitch, Bianco pulled another RBI base hit into right field to give the Johnnies a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the fourth, the contest continued to go back and forth when Ella White hit a lead-off solo home run off to left field, 4-2.
St. John's kicked off the top of the fifth by loading up the bases behind a Lysiak infield single and a pair of walks by Thompson and Macari. Lysiak then scored and Thompson advanced to third on an error during an attempted pick-off at first base, 5-2. Stouffer drove in another on an RBI groundout ahead and another error on a Casto ground ball allowed an additional run to come home, 7-2.
Serafinko followed up the three-run inning by sitting down the Bulldogs 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth and struck out the side in the sixth to hold onto the Red Storm's five-run advantage.
The Johnnies added to its lead in the top of the seventh with Thompson and Macari leading off the frame with a pair of base hits before Melanie Santos drove an RBI single into center field, 8-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Serafinko closed out the game by retiring the Bulldogs in order to give the Red Storm an 8-2 victory.
St. John's will now return home for four games, beginning with a matchup against Fordham at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
