The Red Storm out-hit the Rams in Wednesday’s loss
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (23-10-1) fell to Fordham, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field in Queens.
The Johnnies' offense was led by Jess Bianco, Cassidy Stouffer and London Jarrard who each tallied a pair of hits in the contest.
Celia Macari brought home the lone run for St. John's on an RBI double in the sixth inning. The graduate student now has four two-baggers and nine RBIs on the season.
Pitcher Ana Serafinko tossed three clean innings of relief, keeping the Red Storm within striking distance late in the game. The left-hander owns a 2.15 ERA and has struck out 167 batters in 101 innings this year.
Fordham (13-16) jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first on a Sydney Wells two-run home run to center field, 2-0.
The Red Storm attempted to respond in the bottom of the first when Bianco led off the contest with an infield single to third base and advanced to second on a throwing error. However, Fordham's Olivia Simcoe recorded the next three outs to leave the inning unscathed.
Starter Loreley Francia bounced back on the rubber in the top of the second, sitting the Rams down 1-2-3 by notching a pair of punchouts and a weak groundout back to the circle, 2-0.
Wells notched her second homer in the top of the third, sending another two-run shot over the right-field wall to give Fordham a 4-0 advantage.
After Francia sat the Rams down 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth, St. John's put two runners when Stouffer recorded a bunt single and Macari walked. Simcoe found her way out of the jam, tallying the final two outs to hold the Rams' four-run lead.
Serafinko entered in relief of Francia in the top of the fifth and notched back-to-back clean frames, punching out four combined batters to keep the score at 4-0 in favor of Fordham into the bottom of the sixth.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Stouffer recorded her second base hit with a line drive single through the left side before Macari drilled an RBI double to the center-field wall to give the Red Storm its first run of the ballgame, 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, Serafinko tossed her third consecutive scoreless inning of relief, giving the Johnnies a final chance to come back in the bottom of the seventh.
Simcoe closed out the games for the Rams in the bottom of the seventh, working around a Jarrard two-out bunt single to seal the 4-1 victory.
St. John's will now continue BIG EAST play when it welcomes Providence to Red Storm Field for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
