St. John’s Splits a Pair of Contests with Army and UNF

The Red Storm fell to the Black Knights before shutting out the Ospreys
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The St. John's softball team (15-8-1) split a pair of contests against Army and North Florida on Friday at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Johnnies opened the day by falling to the Black Knights, 4-1, before Ana Serafinko tossed a complete game shutout to give the Red Storm a 1-0 victory over the Ospreys.
Serafinko recorded her second shutout of the season, allowing just three hits and a walk while punching out nine batters to silence UNF's bats. The two-way standout also produced a double in the contest.
Anese Thompson led the offense in the opening contest, tallying three hits. The senior also drove in both of St. John's runs between the two contests.
London Jarrard and Jess Bianco totaled two hits each on the day. Bianco leads the team with 34 hits on the season while Jarrard sits second with 33.
Game 1
The Red Storm offense struck early against Army (9-8) with Thompson recording an RBI groundout to bring home Jess Biancowho reached on an error and advanced to third on a Jarrard single, 1-0.
Inside the circle, starter Loreley Francia tallied three consecutive scoreless frames to open the contest, striking out three batters to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of St. John's after the third inning.
The Johnnies threatened to add to its lead putting runners on the corners following Melanie Santos drawing a walk and Madison Konopka reaching on an error, but Army's starter Breanna Izzo was able to record the third out to keep the score at 1-0.
The Black Knights entered the run column in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs on five hits to take a 4-1 lead. Jailynn Banda entered the circle in relief to record the third out and strand a runner on second.
After Banda sat Army down 1-2-3 in the fifth, the Red Storm loaded the bases in the sixth after Santos reached on an error, Natalie Casto singled and Cassidy Stouffer drew a walk. However, Izzo once again got out of the jam, tallying the third out to hold onto Army's three-run advantage.
Banda recorded her second consecutive 1-2-3 frame in the sixth, giving St. John's an opportunity to rally in the seventh, but Army prevailed to win 4-1.
Game 2
St. John's once again jumped out to an early lead in the later contest against North Florida (18-8) with Bianco reaching on an infield single and Jarrard taking the first pitch she saw up the middle to put runners on the corners. Thompson then brought home Bianco on an RBI groundout, 1-0.
Serafinko sat the first two batters down with a pair of strikeouts before the Ospreys put two runners on with a walk and single, but Serafinko punched out the next batter to hold the Red Storm's one-run advantage.
UNF's starter Allison Benning and Serafinko then exchanged a pair of blank frames to hold the score at 1-0 in favor of the Johnnies after three innings of play.
In the top of the fourth, the Red Storm threatened when Thompson reached on an error before Serafinko pulled a double into right field, putting runners on second and third. However, Benning managed to record the third out, holding St. John's lead to 1-0.
